THEORY

One of the applications of sequential logic circuits is counter. In digital circuit and
microprocessor systems, counter normally counts in binary and can be made to count in up or
down sequence. Two counters such as asynchronous and synchronous are usually being used.
Each counter has its own connection and operation. Basically, flip-flops are utilized in
constructing these counters.

Asynchronous counter ripples as it goes through to its successive flip flops. In this counter, each
flip-flop output drives the CLK input of the next flip-flops. The flip-flops do not change states in
exact synchronism with the master CLK.

Asynchronous counter can either be designed as up counter or down counter. Regardless on

the type of flip-flop, the design of the up counter and down counter depends on the way the
CLK input is connected and the type of CLK either it is positive edge triggered or negative edge
triggered.

PROCEDURE

PART 1: UP-COUNTER

1. Connect the circuit as shown in Figure 1.

2. Connect the Q and Q to the LED display and BCD 7 segment display as the output.
3. Give the CLR input to High.
4. Apply the clock signal from the clock input.
5. Produce a truth table based on your observation, draw the waveforms and write your
discussion.
