prices, in a bid to boost book-
ings ahead of the holidays.

OURISTS visiting the
UAE will be able to claim
refund on the tax they pay
while shopping from November
18, 2018. To qualify for the re-
fund of the Value Added Tax
(VAT), tourists must be at least
18 years old and must intend to
leave the UAE within three
months of purchase along with
the goods they have bought.
The minimum purchase should
be worth Dh 250. Under the new
scheme, tourists can claim a tax
refund within 90 days of pur-
chase.
Tourists will be able to claim
refunds at designated counters
at Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah
International Airports from No-
vember 18. Refund counters will
be opened at other airports and
land and seaports from Decem-
ber 16, 2018. They must ac-
company their purchases when
they leave the UAE. It is ex-
pected that most of the VAT re-
fund from tourists will be from
purchases of gold jewellery, elec-
tronics and luxury goods. No re-
fund can be claimed on goods
shipped separately.
The daily maximum VAT re-
fund for tourists has been capped
at Dh 10,000 (` 1,96,450) in
cash. But if the refund claim ex-
ceeds that amount, then the
funds will be transferred elec-
tronically to the tourist.
Tourists will be able to claim

Bangkok, seats can be booked
for as low as Dh 2,305 (`
45,281), Beirut for Dh 1,065 (`
20,921) and Milan starting for

tani said, more than 4,500 com-
panies have registered to the
tourist tax refund scheme. The
figure is expected to rise to 6,000
by the end of the year and could
be as high as 10,000 by the
end of next year.
To be eligible for the scheme,
companies must first undergo a
credit assessment. The reason
for this is because they will be
the party required to refund the
VAT to the UAE government.
Crew members on flights or
planes that are leaving the coun-
try are not eligible for VAT re-
funds.
VAT is introduced in the UAE
this year as part of plans to di-
versify the country's economy
away from oil.
Refunds will cover a broad
range of goods sought by
tourists, and are in line with
practices in other countries. This
is yet another important mar-
keting initiative retailers can use
to boost sales and ensure that
the UAE remains an attractive
shopping destination.

IFFI, the Country of Focus will
be Israel. Ten films in collabora-

Open air screenings are or-
ganised during the festival where
a large screen is put up in a vast
open area. This year as an ex-
tension of the Khelo India brand-
ing, Indian sports biopics will be
screened. Films included in the

IFFI collaborates with the In-
ternational Council for Film, Tel-
evision, Audiovisual Communi-
cation (ICFT) Paris, to present
a special ICFT prize consisting
of the UNESCO Gandhi Medal

promoted by UNESCO. This
year 10 films will be showcased
for selection of a film to be pre-
sented with this coveted award.
