CHAPTER 3

Research Methodology

This chapter provides a description and discussion of the research process

that informed this study and gives rationale for the choice of the research design,

the researcher sites and the sampling of participants.

Research Method

To investigate the problems stated in this study descriptive type of research

will be used. Descriptive data involves gathering data that describes events and

then organizes, tabulates, depicts and describes the data collection.

Quantitative Research refers to the use of numbers in collecting or working

with research data. Quantitative researchers might study an attitude or experience

by asking a set of defined questions from which a score can be derived (Louw &

Edwards, 2008). A questionnaire was administered to collect quantitative data.

This method of collecting data was selected as is relatively economical and has

the same question for all the participants and can ensure anonymity. The main

reason for administering questionnaire is to get more information from the

respondents to determine the women’s role in disaster risk reduction management

in terms of age, educational attainment and trainings.

Sources of Data

The respondents of the study are the butchers of Talisay, Daet and

Mercedes, Camarines Norte. The sample of this study will applying pursposive

sampling.

Data Gathering Instrument

To achieve the goal of the study, the main data gathering tool used was a

researcher-made questionnaire. Close ended questions were used to facilitate

ease in data collection. The questionnaire has been the main instrument to gather

data. It was of three parts. Part 1 is the profile of the respondents. Part 2 is the

meat slaughtering practices in Talisay,Daet and Mercedes, Camarines Norte and

the Part 3 is the occupational health hazards in meat slaughtering practices of

butchers in Talisay, Daet and Mercedes, Camarines Norte. Ease in accomplishing

the questionnaire was provided by presenting items that requires putting a check

mark on the corresponding answer. Research problems number 2 and 3 were

presented in a 4–point Likert-type question.

Before handing out the questionnaire, validation was done to determine if

the statement conceptualizes by the researcher were appropriate for information

that is needed to be measured. In study validation of the questionnaire was done

through drafts of questions then presented to the research adviser to review its

content and interpretability.

34

The following scale was used:

Score Range Interpretation

4 3.26-4.0 Strongly Agree

3 2.51-3.25 Agree

2 1.76-2.50 Disagree

1 1.0-1.75 Strongly Disagree

Data Gathering Procedure

The needed request letters for the conduct of this study were written and

personally delivered to the concerned persons. Upon approval, the respondents

were recruited individually.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The data were analyzed and interpreted as soon as collected. With the use

of frequency count percentage technique and weighted mean to come up to a

better and comprehensive interpretation which is the basis of relevant and actual

conclusion. Therefore, it will allow the researcher to present the data in more

meaningful way and have simpler interpretation.
