Section 1

Consider the skills listed below and rate how important you think each skill is for employment and how competent you are in this skill.
Consider how each of these skills may enhance your performance, and allow you to develop and advance further. You may wish to discuss
these with your advisor of studies. Alternatively, you may wish to ask a friend or family member, and to compare and discuss your separate
findings.

Once you have rated yourself, multiply the number in the column marked ‘Competence’ with that in the column ‘Job Importance’. So, for
example, if you feel that you are not very proficient in verbal and written communication (i.e. you have rated your competence at 4), but that
these skills are very important for employment (i.e. you have rated it at 5), then your overall total score would be 5 X 4 = 20.

Identify your learning needs

Now pick three of the highest scoring skills from the above audit (by multiplying your scores as shown above) that you need to develop further.
List these below in order of priority.

Skill Area Action Plan for Development and where you can access these
I will take an online course for further maths so I am able to develop my skills and improve them, I will also be
1. Application of able to access a college course for extra maths or I will be able to go to night school so I am able to get a higher
Number qualification in maths but I will be able to learn more and improve the knowledge I already have and gain more. I
would be able to access this by searching it on google and seeing what is available for myself and which is best
suited to me.
Also like the maths I would take an course which is higher than GCSE and improve my skills in ICT so I can learn
2. ICT more and become more in advanced with using technology this would help me within getting a job as most things
are all on technology nowadays and having a high qualification would allow me to do that. I will make sure that I
do this by doing an online course by finding it online and applying for it.
Improving my communication would help me to speak more clearer and in the right context with people. I will
3. Communication also be able to learn new things about communication and how to speak the right way to people how to act to show
I am interested in what they say. I will be able to attend courses which are available to people about the correct
way to use communication in every scenario possible.

Section 2: Providing Evidence you have the Skills

COMMUNICATION
Communication may be formal or informal, personal or impersonal, creative or factual. Messages may be delivered verbally, in writing or non-
verbally. There are many areas where examples of each communication approach may have been successfully applied, at university, at work, at
home, etc

Written - Ability to express self well in writing Ability to express self well in writing
Evidence I have to show I am able to express self well in writing is I have a CV, I made the document so I was
able to apply for jobs. In this document I have written a personal statement which is a short paragraph
describing myself, it also include my education, work history, hobbies and references. I also write letters to my
auntie who lives in a different country, I will write about things that have happened and ask how she is and
how the family is, I will write 2 to 4 letters in a month to her depending on how fast she replies to me. I
recently created a personal statement for a job which I was wanting, I wrote a small paragraph (5-7 lines)
expressing my interest in this job and made sure it was formal. At work throughout the team meetings I will sit
and write down the minutes from the meetings and what everyone has said such as ways to improve the
workplace, things they want to change and more.

Verbal:
Informal – ability to network easily with other people
I recently booked a holiday for me and my family, I rang the company and spoke to one of their workers to
arrange a holiday package which would include the flights and accommodation for me and my family. We spoke
about the different packages they had available for the dates I wanted to go away for and the prices of them all,
type of seating I would want on the flights if I wanted to reserve any seats. When I started college I made friends
with some of the people in my class by communicating with them and getting to know them, I also did this at work
I introduced myself to everyone and got to know them.

Formal – ability to express yourself clearly and concisely to a group of people

At school in History I had to do a presentation about the native americans and how they survived in the time they
lived, the things they had created and more. I stood in front of the class and had notes in front of me so I did not
have to keep looking at the board and was able to maintain eye contact with the class whilst talking. When I went
to my job interview, I spoke clearly and pronounced my works correctly and properly whilst talking and spoke
professional when answering the questions I was being asked.

Non-verbal:
Listening – ability to attend actively to others’ views and ideas and understand their point of view
If any of my friends have any issues or problems going on, I will listen to them if they need to talk to someone
and give my full attention to them when they are talking so they know that I care about them and I am there to
help. Whilst I was learning to drive I listened to my instructor on how to drive and what to do whilst driving and to
prove I did that I have passed my driving test. When in college in my lessons, I listen to the tutors when they are
teaching us new things and take notes on what is being said when needed to, I will also listen to when they are
handing a new assignment out, I will listen to what needs to be done and do it, as I listened well and took good
notes I was able to get a distinction in my first year of college and I will continue in the second year to do the
same.
Body Language – ability to match body language appropriately to what is being said verbally
When it is informal communication then my body language might be slouched and I may not maintain eye contact
with the people speaking as they know I will still listen, when in interviews or doing presentations in class I make
sure that my body language gives the impression that I am listening and interested. Recently in an interview I
had, I sat correctly in the chair I was sat in, my back straight, good facial expressions (smiling) and constant eye
contact. This helped me give a good impression to the employer as I was showing I was interested in what they
was saying and that I wanted the job.

WORKING WITH OTHERS

Working with others is a skill highly valued by employers. Suitable evidence for this skill need not be limited to
work experience. You should think of all aspects of your work, studies and social life.

Cooperation - Ability to collaborate effectively within a team

When I did NCS I was a part of a team who worked together on a charity project, we had half a day to prepare a
plan for what we would need to do for the rest of the week, we all inputted our plans of how to advertise the
charity, things to do to get donations for the charity and make awareness overall. We each took turns to present
our ideas to the group then we came up with an overall decision of which planes were the best to follow, I came
up with my ideas of using social media, standing in a store and asking for food donations and then going around
giving leaflets around town to make people aware of the food bank and not everyone can afford food and other
products. Then I gave my opinion on whose ideas was the best when we had to decide which plan to use.

Negotiation - Ability to reach a mutually satisfactory outcome through compromise

When I did work experience for my uncles business, I had to negotiate a reasonable price for a product we needed
for the business, the person who I was talking to on the phone was wanting me to spend more money whereas I
wanted to spend the least amount possible, I used persuasive words and stook to the price that I began with to
encourage the person to decrease the asking price and carry on until it was around the price my uncle was willing
to pay. I have also had to negotiate with a sponsorship with my cricket team, we needed a sponsorship to help get
kits for the new season. I rang a business who used to sponsor a football team I played for, I negotiate with them
so they would give use a certain amount of money to pay for the kits and we would advertise them on our playing
fields.

Sensitivity- Ability to respond appropriately to individual differences, e.g., age, gender, etc.
At NCS I was in a team with different people of ages and gender, one person had additional needs, the first week
when we had to do bonding and team activities. I was able to work well with everyone in my team and we all
made sure that the person with the additional needs did not feel left out and we helped them do all the activities
they were able to do so they did not feel left out. Whilst working alongside the charity as well I made sure that
everyone there didn’t get the wrong impression of me, I talked to as many people as I could and made a lot of
friends with them all.

Leadership - Ability to encourage and motivate others

Throughout school I was the captain of the basketball team, I was in charge of organising who would be playing in
the matches, the set out of the team and what they would need to improve within the training sessions. I also
made sure that they all got along well as a team and when they were playing matches I made sure they were
motivated and hard working when playing. I was also team leader for a week in NCS we took it in turns to be team
leader. I was in charge of making the decisions and giving feedback if needed to but also helping and supporting
all the members of the team to do well and work hard.

APPLICATION OF NUMBER

Calculations - Ability to use a calculator or PC to make calculations

I passed my GCSE maths calculator paper with an A, this is the evidence I have to show that I was able to use a
calculator as I had passed the exam I had about it all. I am able to type in calculations on the calculator and get
an answer on it. If I am using a computer I am capable to get the app up on the screen and do the calculations.

Interpretation - Ability to interpret descriptive statistics, e.g. ratios percentages, means, standard deviations
- Ability to interpret inferential statistics, e.g., confidence intervals, statistical significance, effect size
I can interpret ratios, percentages and means. The evidence I have to show this is that I got an overall A on my
maths GCSE, this shows that I was able to do everything on the test. I passed the test on those topics within the
lessons I had in maths, I also did further maths in which I looked into that further and got taught more about it.
Doing intervals and effect size is something I have evidence for with my grade after my GCSE exam in it.

Application - Ability to organize and present numerical data in an appropriate manner

I have my GCSE certificate for maths with the grade A and with this grade it shows I was capable of understanding
how to do things and put the numbers in the correct date. An example being I had to find the median in this exam
which meant I had to put all my data in order so I was able to find the median, I also have to present numerical
data within work. I have to make sure that all the stock numbers go in numerical order so when putting the stock
out from the stockroom it is easier to find then searching for the name.
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

File Management Techniques - Ability to create, store and retrieve files

If I am needing to print files off for my course or work I will save it to my USB stick so I am able to travel with it
and print it off where ever I need it, an example I have is on my USB stick I have my CV on there so if I have any
interviews or if I go job hunting I can print it off either in college or at home and be prepared.

Word Processing - Ability to use a word processing package to produce a variety of formats of documents
I have a CV which is saved on to my google docs and is ready if I am ever in need of applying for a job, I used a
template for CV on the template section so it looked good and would stand out more when employers look at it. I
also use word to do my coursework on and I make sure the format I use for that is formal and plain as it is an
assignment and needs to look professional. Recently I had to create a brochure for an assignment so I had used a
template which was reasonably suitable for the topic and put all information required onto it.

Spreadsheets - Ability to use a spreadsheet to record and manipulate different sets of data
The evidence of this is I have my GCSE certificate for ICT and an entire unit was based on spreadsheets, I had to
make sure that I was able to use all the formulas and insert graphs into the spreadsheets. I also use spreadsheets
in work to workout the costs of the products we need and the selling the store does. I have also used it in a recent
assignment where I had to create a spreadsheet on the costs of a business.

Databases - Ability to retrieve information from a database/ Ability to create a database

Also in ICT I had to do databases, I had to do a database on which superhero was the best, I made a table which
had all the information on it and made sure that the classes opinions were included within the table. I was then
able to design queries and run it with the correct information so if anyone had to search then they were able to.
On this unit I completed I got a distinction as I knew what I was doing and created it very well.

Presentations - Ability to create and display a PowerPoint presentation

Throughout school I did a lot of presentations for certain projects, I was able to insert moving images, videos and
more into the powerpoints by adding the link or making sure the image was the correct image for it to work. I
created a presentation for History about the native americans and how they coped within the time they lived in, I
did not get a grade on it as it was revision but the feedback I had was it had everything included and it was
presented well with them theme and transitions of the slides.

Information and Communication - Ability to send and receive email

In school the emailing system used was outlook, it had everything included in it and if any emails were sent to me
I was able to access them within outlook emails on my computer. I could log in on my phone or on the computer
to access my emails and whilst growing up my first email account was with hotmail, I now use gmail but I would
use hotmail to email friends from school. If i need to send emails I will compose them and using outlook in school
if I struggled with anything or needed to hand work in I would email my teachers to ask or attach work and they
would reply to the email.

Ability to send and receive attachments as email

I have sent my CV to an employer recently, they asked me to attached by email and send before my interview, I
composed the email and pressed the paperlink icon on the email and selected my CV document so I was able to
send it to them. I also receive attachments via emails, the employer sent me an application form to fill out and to
bring to the interview.

Ability to use an internet browser e.g. Internet Explorer, Netscape, AOL

If I am needing a definition for a certain word for an assignment then I will search it on Internet explorer by
clicking on the icon and waiting for it to load then type in the search bar, whilst doing work for the assignments I
will use Internet explorer to help if I am needing to do research about certain things or if I am needing certain
facts to help support what I am saying.

Ability to download files from the internet and transfer to WP

Whilst revising for my GCSE’s I would download past papers from the official exam board to practice for my
exams, I would click on the link of the exam I was wanting to do and then it would come up at the bottom of the
page and I would click on to it so it would open then I would save it as a word document so I was able to edit on
it.

Ability to use a search engine e.g. Altavista, Google

I use google everyday, I have the search engine on my phone I use it if I am needing to search something specific
for my assignment such as evidence to back up a statement I am saying, I will use google if I am looking for jobs
near me then it will give me the jobs which are available and I will use it if I am needing to do some shopping for
myself or if I am wanting to buy a gift for someone. I will use google to search for holidays if me and my family
are wanting to go away.

PROBLEM SOLVING

Creativity - Ability to generate new ideas or conceive existing ideas in a new way
In NCS we had to work as a group to create a new idea of advertising the charity, we created fun and exciting
advertisements to post on social media to make our friends and families aware, we then thought of ways to get the
public involved by donating food so we set up activities to do in supermarkets where people were able to do it if
they donated food to us. We did it creatively as it would attract the customers more because it was something new
and different.
Organisation and Planning - Ability to set down a systematic sequence of activities and carry them through in an
effective manner
I use my calendar on my phone to put all appointments I have, assignment deadlines so I am able to plan my life
around things I have scheduled. I had to plan a group activity for my team in NCS so we was able to get to know
each other and be able to work well in a team, I had to make sure I used an object I was given and that the activity
would be beneficial for all and would help us bond well as a team.

Research - Ability to gather information in a systematic way to establish certain facts or principles
For an assignment I have recently done I had to gather research about the aims and visions the organisation has
and what type of advertisements they have, I did a lot of research on the organisation so I was able to complete
the assignment in as much as detail as possible. I did research linked to the facts I had about the organisation so I
was able to back up the things I was saying and made sure I had inserted it into my assignment.
Analysis - Ability to understand and summarise information (Detailed examination of structure and content)
I enjoy politics and I will spend my spare time when I am not working or in college reading about the latest that is
happening with the politics and I will make notes about what is happening. I enjoy talking about the facts I have
found out and wrote about to others and getting their opinions. I use a variety of sources to read about politics such
as different news papers, journals been written and more.

Initiative - Ability to initiate, take decisions and act resourcefully

The evidence I have to prove I use my own initiative is when I am work if I see something that needs to be done I
will do it, if the shelves need restocking then I will get the items needed and I will restock the shelves. If any cleaning
needs doing then I will not wait around to be told to do it I will get the products and start cleaning up myself so the
store looks good to the customers and I am having something to do.
IMPROVE OWN LEARNING AND PERFORMANCE

Self Management

Self-awareness – ability to identify and reflect on own strengths and weaknesses in relation to:
If I have any problems or if I am struggling with something then I will raise it up and ensure that I can get the
help needed to learn. I am able to point out my strengths and the evidence I have is that a document I have on
the website I created shows the strengths I have picked out and weaknesses I could improve. I am able to make
good use of my time when doing assignments I will work hard on them and make sure they are complete to the
best of my ability, I had a distinction from the first year to prove that I work hard on my assignments. I recently
created a five year plan which would help me plan what I am doing the next five years and I have updated my CV
so all the relevant details are on there.

Effective learning – ability to learn from a range of situations and apply learning in a variety of contexts
Listening to others is something I have been able to improve from playing basketball and cricket, I had to listen to
others or we would struggle to work well in a team. I made sure that I was listening to everyone and if they had
any suggestions for the team then I would listen so we worked effectively in matches as I started to do this often I
was able to use it in my studies and started to listen in lessons about what was being taught and understanding it
better.
Reasoning skills – ability to defend argument using logical and systematic thinking based on sound evidence
For my references in the assignments I have I will use search engine google for most of the evidence I need when
doing my assignments but I will look at books and try find specific things related. In school doing my native
american presentation I used facts from books in the library, the work I had done in class and I used google to get
all the information I needed for the presentation.

Reflection – ability to reflect on and critique own performance

I failed my first driving test which was a failure but I took it as an advantage and listened to the notes that my
instructor said to me and then practised them for the next test I had which helped me to feel more confident for
the test and I was able to pass as I used the first attempt as something to learn from. I use feedback from
assignments to help with the ones in the future, I read the feedback given and think about how I can imply it in
my other assignments so I don’t make the same mistakes.

Study Skills - Ability to manage and prioritise time to meet deadlines

- Ability to identify relevant sources of information, including people and reference material
- Ability to use a library to find books and journal articles
- Ability to take notes, organize them, and integrate them with other sources of information
- Ability to reference materials using an appropriate system, e.g., Harvard or Vancouver
I use my calendar to organise myself, I make sure that all the important dates are included such as the assignment
deadline days and I make sure that I complete my work before the deadline and prioritise the work over going out
with friends if it is close to the deadline so I am not stressing out about it. Whilst doing my GCSE I had a timetable
on my wall with the dates of the exams and what I would revise each day and how long for to make sure I was fully
prepared for my exams and revised well. Over the years of being in school we had to do reflection where we had to
notice the most effective ways we learn and what we could to make improvements I know that doing things physically
I learn better as I remember it easily and I am not getting distracted as easily. I ensure that I never miss any
deadlines which are set and use variety of references for my work which is proved by the assignments I do.
