EDUCATING YOUNGSTERS
A very good morning to my lecturer Dr. Mary and my fellow friends. Today I would like to grab your
attention to share a topic which is MALAYSIA BLOOD SUPPLY SHORTAGE. To start of my speech, I
would like to ask all of you, do you ever donated blood? Do you know our country had shortage of blood?
So today I would like to share about the shortage of blood supply.
Despite the growth in total donor numbers, chronic blood shortages still persist amidst dwindling donor
population and rising demand. In fact, the blood donation rate in Malaysia is still low as only 2.2% of the
entire population are donors compared to 3.5%–5.0% recorded in developed countries in 2014. While the
World Health Organization (WHO) states that blood donation rates are 33.1, 11.7, and 4.6 donations per
1000 people for high-, middle-, and low-income countries, respectively (World Health Organization, 2016),
the current Malaysian scenario translates to only 22.5 donations per 1000 people. This suggests that much
needs to be done to improve donation rates ahead of the Malaysian government's target dateline of attaining
industrialised nation status by 2020.
The blood shortage situation in Malaysia is manifested by the fact that much of the growth in donor numbers
are within repeat donors instead of new donors. Moreover, an average of 2,000 bags of blood are needed to
treat almost 1,000 patients throughout the nation daily (Bernama, 2015).
Malaysia is facing a shortage of blood supply at hospitals and despite blood donation campaigns and
drives, the number of donors still remain at approximately 2.5%.
An ongoing effort is needed to educate and raise awareness on blood donation, particularly among
youngsters, not only to overcome the shortage of blood supply at hospitals but also to instill positive
values in them.
In conclusion, donating blood is something everyone should be happy to do, given the number of lives
depending on it. This philanthropic action does not only give the gift of life to many. It also gives back
great benefits to those who donate blood.
