Summary Report
Internship is an opportunity which provide great chance to relate the theoretical
knowledge to practical. An internship provides the opportunity for a student or young
professional to work alongside regular staff in a workplace, to gain some basic hands-
on experience and educational/professional insight into a career path

The universities internship program as a course module has allowed me to get an intern
ship in a renowned company. Following with the series of joining procedure. During
the selectin procedure I get to learn different aspect of experience apart from the
academic course. After getting selected as an intern it was difficult for managing the
time, schedule as a professional however as the period lasted I started to feel the sense
of responsibility, duty and professionalism. Being a part of an IT student it was difficult
for me to understand the business process which was the most difficult part during the
internship span but with the dedicated and friendly environment I got familiar to the
business aspect as well. Joining as an inexperienced student but coming out as a
professional has changed the way I do activities in day to day life. I also learned new
technical parts of routing, switching and configuring in real life that has boosted my
confidence to work in real life.

The completion of the internship program was obvious. The report portrays the overall
internship activities and experience. I consider myself lucky to get an opportunity to
complete my industrial placement at renowned company ROyals IT, being a student of
B.sc.IT, leading and organized information technology company. During the internship
period I learn about the tools, technology used in the real work environment.

1.3 The Environment

1.3.1 General Nature of Market

The recent technological development has invited lots of company to emerge in the
field of IT sector. Company’s varies from small firm to highly structured international
level organization. Website development is the department where the nepali market has
flourished successfully because of its demand and easiness of development however
lack of networking and cyber security company has opened the opportunity for the tech
people to commence the newer challenge to stop security threat by starting the
networking company.

1.3.2 Nature of Competition

This topic describes the ways in which competition between firms can benefit
consumers, workers, entrepreneurs, small businesses and the economy more generally.
Several indicators suggest that competition may be decreasing in many economic
sectors, including the decades-long decline in new business formation and increases in
industry-specific measures of concentration. ROyal’s IT moves forward following the
company’s core values and motive. As per the business model, the company has been
focusing to get in the top in the IT industry. Thus, the major competitors are the
organization working in the field of the information technology. There are various
organization which provides such facilities and services as ROyal’s It in the current
market. Those companies have definitely increased the competition in the market. The
company has to go through the number of tender process to get on to the project and
extend their business and services. The company has utilized most of the skilled
resources in marketing and promoting the business.

1.3.3 Effect of technology

In this era of Science and Technology, the market of IT is very large. As, the company
is related to information technology, we can see the rapid development in this field. The
company is directly related to the technology and its growth. The technology is
upgrading very fast. Similarly, the company has to go along with the rapid development
of the technology. If the company fails to move side by side with the growing
technology, it will be difficult for ROyal’s IT to exist in the current market. The
9
SCHOOL OF COMPUTING

Company has taken huge steps towards the upgrade in its hardware and software.
Sometimes, it is also necessary to import technology from outside the country too for
achieving the goals and mission of the company.

1.3.4 Issues within environment that influences the organization

The environment consists of different factor for which the company should be prepared
to challenge with the plan and strategy. Issues like political instability, governments
lack of interest in information technology sectors, standard less competitors etc are the
major concern the company is well aware of.

Competitors among the same field has established themselves as a strong competitor
not even being iso certified company. Standalone group also simply involve in
development process through which the delivery of quality products has been low that
has costed lots of customers trust to the IT company. Being a standard iso certified
company the cost are accordingly for which the client can’t cope because of past
involvement with other low standard organization.

The competitive environment within the working staff has positive influence over the
year. Nurturing the skills, they possess in all the field has allowed wide range of people
showing their interest of growing with the ROyals IT. The tuff competition is always
there some of the companies similar to ROyal’s has been providing good service to the
clients with advance resource and hardware upgrades they have done to match the rapid
changing scenarios. However, the company itself believe in growing with the
environment it has also changed to deliver the best service.

1.4.2 Marketing Department

The marketing department has overall responsibility for growing revenue, increasing
market share and contributing to company growth and profitability. At ROyal’s IT, the
marketing department may just be one person, or it may include a marketing director
or manager plus marketing executives responsible for functions such as advertising,
publications or events. The marketing manager is responsible for all the promotion and
advertisement of the company. He/she is responsible for all the incoming projects from
outside the organization. Market research is a key responsibility for the marketing
department which helps the company identify market opportunities and gain a better
understanding of customer needs. It also helps them understand competitors’ strengths

11

and weaknesses so they can take action to protect business with existing customers or
win business from weaker competitors. The marketing manager or sometimes the junior
marketing manager go through the market for research and product promotion. The
marketing department also reviews the proposal of various products and services and
forward to the clients.

1.4.3 Finance Department

The accounting department in ROyal’s IT is responsible for recording and reporting the
cash flows, both in and out, of a company. There are five basic roles or functions within
the department:

 Accounts receivable
 Accounts payable
 Payroll
 Financial controls
 Financial reporting

Each of these functions are important in business. Because financial controls are an
important part of every area of the accounting department. These are just some of the
main roles and functions of the accounting department in businesses, there are many
more responsibilities the accounting department is responsible for and a number of
subcategories. Those will depend upon the incoming projects while the specific roles
may vary from Services to services, one thing is certain: if the accounting department
does not perform these key functions effectively and efficiently, the company could be
headed for some serious problems.

1.5 The Department

The department I was involved with is an IT department as a network assistance under
the supervision of bipin thapa. The networking department is responsible for cyber
security, physical security and routing configuration.

1.5.1 Role in the Activity of Department

The role in the department was as a network assistance however more of the work was
for learning process. I was assigned the task to learn the fundamental of networking and
later on configuring the routers and network devices for the implementation in any
department or organization. The other activity involves the installation of surveillance
cameras in different parts.

1.6 Communication policy

For efficient communication it is necessary that the receiver understands the meaning
of the message and indicates it to the sender through some expected reactions. The
major process of communication in the company is verbal communication and
sometimes written. Effective Communication is significant for managers in the
organizations so as to perform the basic functions of management, i.e., Planning,
Organizing, Leading and Controlling.

Communication helps managers to perform their jobs and responsibilities.

Communication serves as a foundation for planning. All the essential information must
be communicated to the managers who in-turn must communicate the plans so as to
implement them. Organizing also requires effective communication with others about
their job task. Leaders as managers of ROyal’s IT communicate effectively with their
subordinates so as to achieve the team goals. Controlling is not possible without written
and oral communication. The supervisor and the top level management prefer verbal
communication rather than written with the employees at ROyal’s IT. Written
communication is preferred on internet and to connect with the clients.

2 Technical Report

2.1 Introduction
At university, technical report writing is a frequently used assignment format in
faculties of engineering and in the applied sciences. This is because the assignment
tasks require students to draw theory and real world situations together, and to present
the information in a structured and accessible format; for example, engineering students
may be asked to solve a design problem or investigate and evaluate the solutions to an
environmental problem while Information Technology students might be asked to
develop a program or an information management plan for a specific issue or company
or to evaluate recent developments in the telecommunications industry. Learning how
to report on technical information to others is an important component of technical
studies. (unilearning, 2000)

The first step towards the intern is the life changing opportunity. Though different
organization has different procedure of internship ROyal’s IT has a bit different
approach. At first the main focus was time table and management. After some days they
gave me small task about networking devices research as well as physically getting
involved with it in training/practical department. The main idea was to research,
implement and supervised.

In the middle of the internship span I was given case scenarios of similar organizations
in which the company itself was linked with for the implementation of the networking
that also involves the physical security. I was deployed in different places as a helping
hand and observer to get familiar with the plans, methods, resource allocation and time
management.

1.1 Outline
Throughout the internship period different task were assigned by the supervisor some
of the task are related activity are listed below:

15
SCHOOL OF COMPUTING

General guidance
During the start of internship, it was about the research on the topic of networking,
topologies, networking devices, network transmission media, network medium access
control, network control and diagrams. After the completion of research activity part,
they wanted to use the theoretical part to collaborate with practical guidance.

2.1.1 Networking
Networking refers to the total process of creating and using computer networks, with
respect to hardware, protocols and software, including wired and wireless technology.
It involves the application of theories from different technological fields, like IT,
computer science and computer/electrical engineering. (techopedia, 2018). The main
area of involvement was the networking area. The sub task is also discussed below.

2.1.1.1 Routing configuration

Fortunately, the configuration steps are rather straightforward. After you connect the
router to the network or simply turn on a wireless router, you connect to the router by
using your PC`s web browser such as Internet Explore. The documentation that came
with the router gives you the router`s web page address.

2.1.1.2 Clamping of network cables

There's no doubt that computer networking is extremely complex when you delve into
it deeply, but the basic concept of linking up computers so they can talk to one another
is pretty simple. Generally, clamping is done of network cable i.e. cat-6 cable with
standard wires.

2.1.2 Network Trouble shooting

Network troubleshooting is the collective measures and processes used to identify,
diagnose and resolve problems and issues within a computer network. It is a systematic
process that aims to resolve problems and restore normal network operations within the
network. (Kahkoska, 1999)

Some of the activity involved in network trouble shooting are mentioned below:

16
SCHOOL OF COMPUTING

 Finding and resolving problems and establishing Internet/network connection of a

computer/device/node
 Configuring a router, switch or any network management device
 Installing cables or Wi-Fi devices
 Updating firmware devices on router switch
 Removing viruses
 Adding, configuring and re-installing a network printer

2.1.3 System administrator

The activity was also assigned for multi user computer system, including a local- area-
network(LAN). Activity include:
 Adding and configuring new work station
 Setting up user accounts
 Iinstalling system-wide software and Microsoft server 2012 R2
 Performing procedures to prevent the spread of viruses

2.1.4 Configuring inter VLAN

The other major activity involved is the configuration of VLAN. The configuration and
troubleshooting steps applicable to the creation of Layer 3 interfaces. VLANs divide
broadcast domains in a LAN environment. Whenever hosts in one VLAN need to
communicate with hosts in another VLAN, the traffic must be routed between them.
This is known as inter-VLAN routing. On Catalyst switches it is accomplished by the
creation of Layer 3 interfaces (switch virtual interfaces (SVIs) ). Some of the steps are
mentioned below:

1. Enable routing on the switch with the ip routing command. Even if IP routing
was previously enabled, this step ensures that it is activated. Switch(config)#ip
routing
2. Make note of the VLANs that you want to route between. In this example, you
want to route traffic between VLANs 2, 3 and 10.
3. Use the show vlan command in order to verify that the VLANs exist in the
VLAN database. If they do not exist, add them on the switch. This example
shows the addition of VLANs 2, 3, and 10 to the switch VLAN database

17
SCHOOL OF COMPUTING

Switch#vlan database
Switch(vlan)#vlan 2
VLAN 2 added:
Name: VLAN0002
Switch(vlan)#vlan 3
VLAN 3 added:
Name: VLAN0003
Switch(vlan)#vlan 10
VLAN 10 added:
Name: VLAN0010
Switch(vlan)#exit
APPLY completed.
Exiting....
4. Determine the IP addresses you want to assign to the VLAN interface on the
switch. For the switch to be able to route between the VLANs, the VLAN
interfaces must be configured with an IP address. When the switch receives a
packet destined for another subnet/VLAN, the switch looks at the routing table
in order to determine where to forward the packet. The packet is then passed to
the VLAN interface of the destination. It is in turn sent to the port where the end
device is attached.
5. Configure the VLAN interfaces with the IP address identified in step
Switch#configure terminal
Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.
Switch(config)#interface Vlan2
Switch(config-if)#ip address 10.1.2.1 255.255.255.0
Switch(config-if)#no shutdown
6. Configure the interface to the default router. In this scenario you have a Layer
3 FastEthernet port.
7. Configure the default route for the switch.
8. Configure your end devices to use the respective Catalyst 3550 VLAN interface
as their default gateway. For example, devices in VLAN 2 should use the

18
SCHOOL OF COMPUTING

interface VLAN 2 IP address as its default gateway. Refer to the appropriate

client configuration guide for more information on how to designate the default
gateway.

2.1.5 Physical security

Surveillance is the monitoring of behavior, activities, or other changing information for
the purpose of influencing, managing, directing, or protecting people. This can include
observation from a distance by means of electronic equipment (such as closed-circuit
television (CCTV) cameras) or interception of electronically transmitted information
(such as Internet traffic or phone calls). The activity also involved the installation of
physical security in different organization. The idea behind it was to get acquainted
with the methods and procedure of initializing the activity. It was an amazing
experience because everything was physical so I got to learn about planning, setting
layout, comparing and contrasting different factors that effects the whole plan and time
management.

2.2 Tools used

The assigned task was done on the training/practical department. The tools involved
were the computers, switches, network devices, wires, different software, catalyst
switch models, cameras etc.

3 Conclusions & Recommendations

The internship in ROyal’s IT has provided an amazing life changing experience to
broaden my knowledge and skills. The real life scenario activity was really challenging
and I learned lesson on time management, problem solving technique, team work etc.
additionally, the experience was more interesting because of my interest in the same
field all the technical terms and difficulties were enthusiastically solved. The focus was
to learn about the business process because in career a higher aim is to be achieved for
which every experience is necessary. This experience has changed the way I am making
me more professional. Transforming from student to professional made me sense the
responsibility. Finally, I am fortunate to get such an opportunity.

At last, I would recommend any student related to networking to get an internship from
the ROyals IT because the company focus on the growth of young and enthusiast
students to associate with them. The resources available in the company is also highly
sophisticated and as of the currently changing environment. The company highly
focuses on the innovation. The has also strict rules and standards maintained for all the
employees. The norms and values are based on equality. All the individuals are treated
as their own. The working environment is also very sound as well as challenging which
definitely encourages to deliver the most. Some of the things that are guaranteed by
working in this environment are as follows:

 Good communication skills.

 Nurture team and leadership skills.
 Working within time frame.
 Punctuality
 Implementation of theoretical knowledge into practical knowledge.
