The world of genetically modified technology continues to dominate
across the world. Genetically modified products which are unknown to many can already be seen everywhere, from the fruits, vegetables, corns to soybeans and other agricultural crops that are added as ingredients to the food that people eat of today’s generation. According to Dr. Saturtina Halos (2017), one of the pillars of biotechnology in the country, Filipino breakfast can include hotdog, cheese, coffee, fruit juice, eggs and corned beef- all containing genetically modified textured vegetable protein or TGP. The commercial development of GM products began in 1996 and has expanded each year ever since. However, despite the potential benefits of these GMP’s in terms of raising agricultural advantages and increased resistance to diseases-thus reducing the need for pesticides, the controversial modification of the genetics of crops and organisms sparked debate over its safety. People are questioning it for it may pose hazards to human health and there are growing concerns as the alteration of the genetics of crops may cause risk to the environment.
This study revolves in the variables of natural alternatives to
genetically modified products. The main purpose of the study is to be able to know if these alternatives are better to be used rather than the GM products. An example of non-gmo alterative is having a fair and sustainable ways of farming and producing food, agro-ecology which is already existing in Europe. They keep ecosystems in balance, respect wildlife, preserve soil, water and other natural resources, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and provide high quality, healthy, local and seasonal food with conventional and organic seeds and livestock breeds. The study revolves in the variables of natural alternatives to genetically modified products. The main purpose of the study is to know if it is possible to produce food without poisoning people and the planet. Here are some examples: Having a fear and sustainable ways of farming and producing food, agro-ecology which is already existing in Europe. They keep ecosystem in balance, respect wildlife, preserve soil, water and other natural resources, reduce greenhouse emission and provide high quality, healthy, local and seasonal food with conventional and organic seeds and livestock breeds. In contrast, to the ever-growing supermarkets and increasing corporates control of the whole food chain, there has been a renaissance in locally produce, Agro-ecological food across many countries. These have led to more and better jobs, including young people and more vibrant economy.
Significance of the Study
The increase of genetically modified products in the market sparks
concern over its credibility in terms of its safety to human health and potential dangers that it can pose to the environment. GMP’s increase herbicide use that kills the weeds. However, it created “superweeds” that are resistant to herbicide. This caused farmers to use stronger and more toxic herbicides to the crops. That’s why alternatives are being proposed by the anti-GMP activists to just stick to the traditional way of farming, which is organic farming. Organic crops are grown without the use of synthetic pesticides and bioengineered genes (GMPs) which can be safer to eat because it contains fewer chemicals and doesn’t contain preservatives. Statement of the Problem
This study aims to determine the Natural Alternatives to Generally
Modified Products. Specifically, this seeks answers on the following questions:
a. What are the natural alternatives to GMP?
b. What is the most effective alternative? c. How can natural alternative benefits farmers and consumer?
Scope and Limitation
The main point of this study is to determine the importance of having
natural alternatives rather than Genetically Modified Products. This study was conducted from 12th Day of October Until 22nd Day of October at Our Lady of Fatima University-Quezon City Campus. The Researchers limited their time and the allotted time for this study in not less than 2 weeks.
Hypothesis
There is no significant difference between the effectivity of
genetically modified products and organisms to Non-GMOs in terms of their benefits to the farmers.
