10 Recommendations to Enhance the Basic Philippine Education in The Philippines

1. Update ALL Books and Reading Materials. I strongly recommend that reading materials be re-
screened and improved. Basic education materials should be devoid of politics and should only
carry validated information. Validation should come from a government appointed group of
people without social, political and religious bias.

2. Add more classrooms. This has been a perennial problem in our country wherein the solution is
always a kilometer away. The reason I believe is that the problem is so closely intertwined with
our country’s politico-economic condition. To address this problem, major reforms are needed in
our political system and we also need a miracle in our financial system. A possible alternative
solution may come in the form of the private sector raising funds for the provision of additional
classrooms.

3. Improve the condition of ALL laboratories and facilities, in the case of absence, PROVIDE
laboratories and basic facilities. Laboratories are an essential part of development. Laboratories
provide a playground for imagination which will then germinate new ideas leading to
improvements and developments.

4. Hire more Teachers. Another perennial problem also associated with budget, hence a difficult one
to address. And again, a problem that needs a philanthropic act coming from the private sector. If
only the affluent from the private sector can come up with some sort of “ADOPT A TEACHER
PROGRAM” wherein they will be the ones to shoulder the expense of the additional faculty.
5. Curb BRAIN-DRAIN. Another problem that is closely associated with financial status. Another
problem that can be solved by an “ADOPT A TEACHER PROGRAM”.

6. Improve the learning experience. This problem can only be addressed by providing BETTER
TEACHERS since this is a pedagogical problem. Screening of teachers should be transparent and
as much as possible reliable and with NO HINT OF BIAS.

7. Maintenance of Health, Nutrition and SANITATION. Health is wealth. Students need a

conducive environment and conducive status to thrive and learn. Hence, feeding programs should
continue. The coordination between the school and the community health centers should be
enhanced. There should also be a close coordination between the school and the local sanitation
authorities to ensure a clean and healthy environment for the students.

8. Reduce DROP-OUT RATE. How to go about this problem is a HERCULEAN TASK since the
solution involves a multi-dimensional approach. First and foremost, the students must see the
value of education. The teacher must be able to relate education to the student’s life
improvement. The teacher must be able to make the student see the importance of education to
the POSSIBLE upliftment of their SOCIO-ECONOMIC STATUS. Without the understanding of
the relationship between education and financial improvement, the students AND their families
will not see practical value in education.

9. FAMILY EMPOWERMENT. At the core of the problem is the family of the student. The family
itself must be able to provide support for the child’s education. Financial opportunities must be
present.

10. COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT. In cases where the bureaucracy fails to deliver, the
community must take the helm in supporting the families within it through community-based
projects that can generate income for the families.
