First Sunday of Advent

At this time of the year we become more conscious of our family as we make
preparations for cards, gifts and visits. Today’s gospel warns us not to get “weighted
down” by activity. “Take heed to yourselves” during this Advent and devote yourself to
appreciating the fit of those who are already such an important part of your life. The
greatest gift this season might be the true appreciation of Christ in others.
Barberton Area Community Ministry item for the Month of December is Canned Fruit. All
donations can be placed in the bench in front of the giving tree in the vestibule of the
church. Donations are picked up on Monday mornings. Thank you again for all your
support in helping us serve our brother’s and sister’s in need.

In the October/November envelope packet, you will find an envelope for Christmas
Flowers. A donation to the Flower Fund helps to defray costs of flowers and decorations
in our church during the upcoming Christmas season. For those using Faith Direct, if you
have made a contribution, please drop the names of the intended into the offertory
basket or contact the rectory at 330-745-0011.

The Women of Faith will celebrate St. Nicholas Day with PSR and day school students in our
parish by distributing a St. Nick Holy Card and candy cane to each child and staff member on
12-2-18 (PSR) and on 12-6-18 (day school). In addition, each teacher will receive a sheet with
some information about the life of Nicholas and a prayer to share with the students that day.

Have you gotten your tag from The Giving Tree yet? If you have not,
pull off a tag or two, there are many price ranges to choose from.
Return your unwrapped gift(s) according to the directions on the tag the
weekend of December 8 & 9. This year we are supporting Embrace Clinic a.k.a.
Community Pregnancy Center, the Elizabeth Ministries and the Peter Marin Center.
For your convenience, gifts can be dropped off at the rectory anytime during regular
business hours before the 7 of December.
During this holiday season, the students of St. Augustine school in grades K-2 are
participating in a service project called the Mitten Tree Project. The purpose of this project is
to collect new mittens, gloves, hats, scarves, and socks for those individuals within our
community who are in need. These items will decorate our Mitten Tree that is outside of
Room 210, The Kindergarten room. Your contributions should be for children and should not
be wrapped. The Mitten Tree Project will run from December 3 through December 14. The
items collected at the end of these two weeks will be given to those in need at the Christmas
Day Dinner and then donated to the Community Pregnancy Center. This is an opportunity for our students
to help children and families stay warm during these upcoming winter months. Please help. Donations can
be sent over to the school or placed in a box in the vestibule of the church. Thank you for your help in
advance!

Join Deacon Robin Adair as he presents Robert Barron’s “The Pivotal Players” St. Augustine & St.
Benedict, December 5, 12 & 19 in the rectory meeting room from 7-8:30pm. Please contact the

Women of Faith are preparing a mailing list of names and addresses of

parishioners who are homebound, in nursing homes or are veterans for our
Christmas card ministry. If you have a friend, neighbor or relative who would
enjoy a card, please call Anne Sweeney at 330-825-6302 and we will be happy
to add his/her name to our list. Names and addresses must be submitted by
December 10, 2018 as the WOF does much of the card-writing at our December 11th meeting.

The St. Augustine Advent Communal Reconciliation Service will be on Monday, December 10
at 7:00pm in the church. Numerous priests will be available and you may receive the
sacrament either face-to-face or with a screen in a confessional. All are encouraged to take
part in this special sacrament, please plan accordingly.

The next WOF meeting is set for Tuesday evening, December 11, at 6:30pm in the school cafeteria.
Join us for Christmas card-writing to homebound and nursing home parishioners, family and friends
and local veterans. Other events may include carols, Christmas trivia, a service project for our parishes
Christmas Day Dinner- and cookies, for sure! Bring a friend!

Soup Kitchen Crew ~ Our next Soup Kitchen at the First Presbyterian Church (across from
the Barberton library) is scheduled for Tuesday, December 11 beginning at 2:00 p.m. We
have several guest chefs who will prepare their best soups to share with our guests. The
menu will be rounded out with fresh rolls/butter, bowls of shredded cheese and desserts of
fresh pie. There are tables to be dressed, coffee to make and serving to be done. All parishioners are
welcome. Never been to a soup kitchen? What are you waiting for? It will change your life! For

All are invited Thursday evening December 13 at 7 pm to the School Advent &
Christmas Concert being held in the church! It will be featuring the K-5 students as
well as the school choir. Plan to make this a part of your Christmas celebrating and help us
usher in the sacred season of Christmas!

following the Christmas Concert on Thursday, December 13 in the school

The December Book Club meeting will take place on Thursday, December 13 at 1pm
in the Rectory Meeting room. Our selection is “In This House of Brede” by author
Rumer Godden and explores a late-in-life religious vocation and its impact on the
woman entering a Benedictine cloistered convent and on the community itself. This
book is a great reminder that God calls us throughout our life and sometimes in

Join fellow parishioners for a few friendly hands of Euchre, Friday,

December 14 beginning at 6:30pm in the cafeteria. Let’s celebrate the
Christmas Season with a party, bring a covered dish or dessert to share,
drinks will be provided.

Christmas Party Crew ~ Mark your calendar for Saturday, December 22 9:15am when we
will be setting up for this year’s Christmas Dinner/Party in the SAC and prepping some of
the food items. There are lots of things to do from dressing tables to arranging gifts. Come
help us prepare for this event. It will really help to set the tone for this blessed time of year!

This year, we are taking our annual Christmas Dinner for those in need and turning it into a
PARTY, complete with games and entertainment. We are in need of small denomination gift
cards to include as game prizes. $1 $5 $10 certificates from area businesses, like Dollar Tree,
Dollar General, Subway, McDonald’s and the like would be greatly appreciated. Please place
in an envelope with GIFT CARD FOR DINNER clearly written on the outside and drop in the
collection basket or deliver to the Rectory. *Those wishing to help on Christmas Day ~ plan to arrive
any time after 10:00am with doors opening for guests at 1:00 p.m. and prayers beginning at 1:30 p.m. We
will begin clean up at around 2:30 p.m. with doors closing at 3:00 p.m. We are using real china this year
and need willing individuals to wash dishes. What a great way to “pay it forward”! Questions? Call or text

We are looking for Prayer Warriors……Someone to pray for our School and PSR students.
All you need to do is choose a set of cards with a child’s name on it, place your name (last
names only) on the cards. For those interested, please call Chris Christoff at 330-472-1557

Please consider joining this ministry of prayer for our students, we would like each student
to have their own warrior. Cards will be available around the second week of December.
Last year’s changes in the tax law kept in place several popular and attractive charitable gifting options.
Gifting appreciated stock (held more than 1year) to our parish may allow you to deduct the stock’s full
value and bypass capital gains tax. Also, if you are 70 ½ or older, you may be able to reduce your taxable

administrator for more information and to be sure that a gift is made directly from an IRA to a qualified

A Christmas Concert with the Daughters of St. Paul Choir will take place on Friday, December
