1. Name and discuss the five common functions of most organizations.

The five common functions of an organization are Accounting, Marketing, Human Resources,
Production, and Research. Accounting handle all financial activity from billing customers to
paying employees. Marketing is in charge of planning, prices, promoting, selling, and distributing
the organization’s goods and services. Human Resources focuses on people such as hiring,
training, promoting, and other human-centered activities. The production functions creates
finished goods and services using raw materials and personnel. Finally, research function
identifies, investigates, and develops new products and services.

2. Discuss the roles of the three kinds of management in a corporation.

There are 3 kinds of management in a corporation they consist of top managers, middle-
managers, and supervisors. Top Managers are responsible of long-term plans in an organization
and require information from divisions below to create strategies. Middle management are
responsible for the tactical planning and maintaining goals. Supervisors are responsible for the
operations, they work in a day to day basis.

3. What are the four most common computer-based information systems?

Four types of computer-based information systems that help track and keep information flowing
in the amount and direction organization needs to stay on track, they include

• TPS –Transaction processing system ; records day-to-day transactions; foundation for


other information systems

• MIS – Management information system ; summary of detail from TPS; produces


standard reports for management

• DSS – Decision support system; data source: flexible analytical tool; assists managers
with solutions for a wide range of problems; uses the TPS

• ESS – Executive support system is also referred to as the Executive information system
(EIS); highly summarized information presentations; gives senior management a broad
company view, assists

4. Describe the different reports and their roles in managerial decision making.

There are three types of reports that play a role in decision making they include periodic,
exception, and demand reports. Periodic reports are produced at regular intervals. Exception
reports are those that bring attention unusual events. Finally, demand reports are those that are
asked for upon request.

5. What is the difference between an office automation system and a knowledge work system?
Office automation systems support the activities of data workers by managing documents,
communications, and scheduling. Secretaries and clerks are data workers. Project managers
programs designed to schedule, plan, and control project resources. Videoconferencing systems
computer systems using the computer and Internet that allow people located at various
geographical locations to communicate and conduct in-person meetings.

Knowledge work systems use specialized systems such as CAD/CAM. CAD/CAM (computer-aided
design/computer-aided manufacturing) are used by design and manufacturing engineers.
