Course Description
• What is Energy Project Management?

• This course introduces the fundamentals of Energy Project Management.

• Specific characteristics of Energy Projects from planning phase to closeout


are introduced.

• Stakeholders, their roles and responsibilities, and their impact and influence
on the projects are discussed.

• Risk management techniques are introduced.

Course Objectives
• The objective of the course is to learn about unique characteristics of
energy projects and the tools to manage these projects. The goal is to give
students a unique advantage in their career by introducing energy project
management concepts. Students will learn about this topic through course
lectures, assignments and project. Students will complete one energy
project management review to practice what they learned. The primary
specific learning and training outcomes are:

– Broaden the students’ knowledge by giving them a brief introduction to project


management in the energy field.
– Acquire a basic understanding of the different phases of an energy project.
– Become familiar with geopolitical aspects of energy projects.
– Understand the roles and accountabilities of different players.
– Manage the risks involved.
– Handle the influences, both internal and external.
– Learn the tools available to project managers.

Learning Activities
• Group Project:
– Each student group (3-4 students) completes an Energy Project
Management. Instructor will choose a topic. Groups will apply Energy
Project Management tools to assess the proposed project. The expected
team product will include, but not limited to, a technical report of no
less than 15 pages and no more than 30 pages.

• Exercises/Assignments:
– Exercises will be given to supplement students understanding of class
materials.

• Final Exam:
– This test is designed to test the students’ cumulative knowledge of
Energy Project Management. This will typically be scheduled in class.
