MICRO-MACHINING
SIEMENS NX OBJECT MICROMILLING PROCESS
Micromachining refers to techniques for fabrication of 3D structures on the micrometer
scale. Until recently watch parts were considered to be the micro components produced for the
purpose of making watches. Recent demands for micro parts have required us to manufacture
variety of micro components used in different fields from entertainment electronics to biomedical
implants. The convenience and value of many products can be substantially increased with reduced
size and weight. With the trend toward miniaturization, micromachining becomes increasingly
important in fabricating micro parts. In this micro milling process, the process will be focused on
3-axis milling in Siemens NX 11 software.
Using the CAD function of Siemens NX 11, the object to be produced was designed
based on a blank of carbon steel with dimension of 3×1×1 mm. The object to be produced is as
follows:
The milling process itself consists of 3 main steps:
1. Removing half of the blank thickness, from 1 mm to 0.5 mm (Planar Milling).
2. Cutting the middle ridge with 0.1 mm of depth and 0.1 mm wide (Planar Milling).
3. Making the first hole with 0.5 diameter and the other 6 holes with 0.3 mm (Hole Milling).

Cutting parameters (HSS Cutting tool):
