Drafting Standards

Paper:
Sketch paper Ideation and concept development.

Vellum Design drawings. ie., Floor plan, RCP, Elevations, Details, etc.

Sizes to be used – 22” x 34”, 17” x 22”, 11” x 17”

Lead and Line Weight:


(darker) Softer lead…2B – HB – H – 2H – 4H – 6H…Harder lead (lighter)

4H - 6H Guide lines (.3mm) = Lettering guides, Note guides, etc.

H – 2H Light Lines (.3mm - .5mm) = Dimension lines, Center lines, Leader


lines, Door swings, Hinge lines, etc.

HB – H Medium Lines (.5mm) = Furnishings, Counters/Cabinets, Doors, etc.

2B – HB Bold lines (.5 - .7mm) = Border lines, Cut/Section lines.

Line Type:
Solid Visible objects, Leader lines and Dimension lines
Hidden ------------ Hidden objects, Objects beyond (above or below)
Center line Indicate center of plan, object (s), etc.
Leader line Connect notes/references to drawing the work is
Break line Indicate a break in the view of a drawing or object
when only a partial view or portion is shown.

Text height:
1/4” (6mm) Titles, Drawing numbers and possibly Subtitles.
1/8” (3mm) General notes, Dimensions, Scale.
Maintain consistent size and location of text throughout drawing(s).

Architectural Graphic Symbols:

Door, clear opening and door swing


radius to drawn at same dimension.

ie., Door width = 2’-10” (860) then


Clear opening = 2’-10” (860) and Door
swing radius = 2’-10” (860)

Elevation (single) indicator – Plan


Indicate one elevation being referenced from a plan to elevations
on another sheet. ½” dia. (12) circle.

Elevations indicator (with key plan) – Plan


Indicate 4 elevations being referenced from a key plan to elevations
on same sheet.

Drawing sheet number

Elevation number

A North arrow must be included on all plan drawings.

Titles:
FLOOR PLAN Use architectural lettering (all capitals)
SCALE: ¼” = 1’-0”
Locate title below plan at left side.

ELEVATION Indicate where elevation is being referenced on plan


SCALE: ¼” = 1’-0”

Dimensions:
Maintain consistent spacing and placement of dimensions lines throughout drawing and
drawing set. ie., If dimension line is located ½” (12) from object or wall at one location in
the drawing, then all other dimension lines should be placed ½” (12).

Maintain consistent size in extension lines and tick marks.

Dimension text to be placed upright horizontally or at 90° counter-clockwise vertically


only.

Avoid crossing dimension lines over each other

Metric Express dimension text in mm units without including the


abbreviation. Ie., 860

Imperial Express dimension text in ft and inches. ie., 2’-10”

Title Block:
Standard Title Block to be used. Details provided in the Studio.
