Clase 3: MIERCOLES 14 NOVIEMBRE

READING FROM LAST CLASS

Writing part 1:

Going over the task: You have 80 Min. To write 2 texts. The first text will
always be an essay and should be 140-190 words long. The second text can be an
article, informal email or letter, a report or a review and should be 140-190 words.

Your grade is based on:

- content (did you write what you were asked to write?)

- communication achievement ( was your writing too formal, too informal, or

just write? )

- Organisation (Did you link paragraphs and sentences? Is there a logical

flow from start to finish?)

- Language ( Did you show off your sparkling vocabulary or did you use
basic words? Did you make lots of grammar spelling mistakes?)

Time management: You have 40 Min per text. You could use your time like this:

1. Planning: 10 minutes
2. Writing: 25 minutes
3. Checking: 5 minutes

Think about what you have to write, what you want to write and how you want to
write it.

You need to link sentences, Cambridge loves that.

FOR EXAMPLE

Procedure:

1. Write on the board the topic, issue and solution, of the exercise.
2. Students have to write about the two points in the question and they then
need to add their own point
3. Elicit how students could structure their essay
a) Paragraph 1: introduction
b) Paragraph 2: point one- problem + solution
c) Paragraph 3: point two- problem+solution
d) Paragraph 4: point three- problem+solution
e) Paragraph 5: conclusion

Vocabulary: Phrasal verbs, activity in the notebook

Phrasal verb are those verbs that are followed by a preposition or an adverb that
changes its meaning. Ex: It´s not the same give, give up.

To understand its grammar we need to separate them in:

1. Transitive verbs: Are those that need a direct object to complete its meaning.
i. You need to fill out this form to register for the course.
ii. I´m looking for my keys.
b) Inseparables: The verb and the preposition goes together and then the direct
object. Ex: Sam is feeling under the weather today, so i´m looking after him.
c) Separable: The direct object goes between the verb and the preposition. Ex:
Her hard work sets her apart from her peers.
2. Intransitive verbs: They cannot have a direct object after them because the
meaning is completed by itself.
i. Can you sit down please?
ii. We should dress up for the party.

Pronunciation:

1. Phrasal verbs as a preposition:

i. Intransitive: the intonation goes in the preposition. Ex: kids, please, stand
UP.
ii. Transitive inseparable: the intonation goes in the verb. Ex: she told me a
silly excuse, but i didn’t FALL for it.
iii. Transitive separable: Usually the intonation is in the preposition. Ex:
they tried to burn the house DOWN.
