AIMS OF THE PROJECT

ARDB Centre for Aerospace Systems Design & Engineering (CASDE) was sanctioned by the
ARDB in March 1998. Board of Governors, IIT Bombay, approved setting up of the CASDE in July
1998. Director, IIT Bombay appointed the first Head, CASDE in August 1998, with the broad aim
of promoting systems design and systems engineering related activities for the benefit of various
DRDO laboratories and National aerospace programmes undertaken by these agencies.

Overall objective of CASDE is to be a hub for creating awareness about Systems Design &
Engineering practices in the Aerospace Industry. More specifically, CASDE was mandated to
undertake;
(1) Human Resource Development, through Continuing Education Programmes (CEP),
Workshops in relevant areas and Post Graduate programme with Specialization in
Aerospace Systems Design and Engineering,
(2) Interaction with Aerospace organizations engaged in major national programmes CASDE
to promote Systems Design approaches and Systems Engineering practices in the design
of aerospace systems and
(3) Conduct system level studies on transport aircraft as a case in point to develop and
demonstrate the use of, and benefits to be derived from, various SDE technologies.

ANNEXURE-II

INTRODUCTION

Systems Design and Engineering (SDE) principles have been evolved to create a structured and
formal process that spawns the complete life cycle of any product. Benefits of SDE processes are
many, including shorter development cycle, lower cost, greater reliability etc. Aerospace industry
worldwide has reaped greatest benefits from Systems Design (SD) & Systems Engineering (SE)
and has also carefully evolved and nurtured these two important disciplines.

In the National context, developments on a large number of aerospace projects e.g. IGMDP, LCA,
SLV etc. within DRDO and ISRO have created a need for a Centre to initiate formal studies in SD
& SE. The Centre for Aerospace Systems Design and Engineering (CASDE) was set up at IIT
Bombay by AR&DB in 1998 in this context. Its main charter is to be a repository of knowledge
base in the areas of systems design, systems engineering and systems integration, including new
and emerging technologies to enable this area. An important feature of the CASDE has been the
postgraduate programme in Systems Design and Engineering (SDE), the only one of its kinds
within the country.

The organizational structure of CASDE consists of (1) The Joint Policy Committee (JPC) which
formulates the overall policy and provides a vision for the Centre in relation to its charter, in
addition to providing the future (long-term) directions of growth of the CASDE. The JPC has met
four times during Phase-I of CASDE. At the next level is the Scientific Programmes Committee
(SPC), which formulates specific, but broad, scientific programmes keeping in mind the policies
laid down by the JPC. The SPC has also met four times during Phase-I of CASDE. At the next
level is the Management Committee (MC), consisting of Core & Associate faculty of CASDE,
including experts from other departments, to oversee after execution of specific activities
undertaken by CASDE.

CASDE phase-I was originally sanctioned for a period of three years at a total cost of Rs. 192
Lakhs, but has continued for over five and a half years, without any additional financial burden to
AR&DB. Annexure-III gives a brief account of various activities that have been completed during
the Phase-I, which has come to end on March 31 st 2004. A more detailed account of all the
activities reported here is provided on the official website www.casde.iitb.ac.in.

SUMMARY OF WORK DONE AND RESULTS OBTAINED FROM THE PROJECT

CASDE came into existence at a time when Design as a discipline in universities was at its lowest
ebb. Design content in curriculum of most aerospace educational institutions had substantially
reduced by 1990s. No educational institution had faculty engaged in research in design
methodologies. IIT Bombay knew that the task of setting up a centre like CASDE was complex.
But substantial hand holding by DRDO laboratories and careful nurturing by all has turned this
experiment into a notable success. Broad objectives of CASDE in Phase-I were; (a) To initiate
educational programme in Systems Design & Engineering, (b) To set up Integrated Modelling &
Simulation Laboratory, (c) To carry out specific system level studies & (d) To create awareness
among the various organization. Summary of work done with respect to these stated objectives is
presented in following sub-sections.

Educational Programme An M. Tech. specialization in Systems Engineering was started at

Aerospace Engineering Department in 2001 and two batches of students from aerospace industry
have passed out. The programme was revised to Systems Design & Engineering, with suitable
changes to its syllabus as well as course contents and has been implemented from July 2003. The
new curriculum has introduced two new courses on MDO and Applied Mechatronics, providing
important background and training in system synthesis and hardware integration. Some of the
projects that past students have undertaken are shown in figures 1 & 2.

Figure 1 Hardware-Software Integration Project Figure 2 Mechatronics Course Project

Integrated Modelling & Simulation Laboratory As part of setting up the Integrated Modelling
and Simulation Laboratory, a number of facilities for software based, hardware based and hybrid
modelling and simulation tools have been acquired/developed. Following figures provide a glimpse
of the kind of infrastructure that has been created as part of IMSL of CASDE (see Figures below).

In addition, IMSL has a large collection of a variety of sensors, actuators, micro-controllers, data
loggers & data acquisition cards etc., to provide students an opportunity to experiment with
different system integration issues. Figure below provide an overview of these.

Test Facilities CASDE has created a set of test facilities to aid the faculty/students in carrying out
the developmental work in areas of systems design and integration, for Mini Aerial Vehicle (MAV).
Some of these are shown in figures below.

Figure 15 Hardware-in-Loop Simulator Figure 16 A Sample 3-D Trajectory

System Level Studies CASDE, in its first phase, has undertaken a number of system level
studies, addressing the issues of concept evaluation, optimization and design. Specifically, an
activity termed Design, Build & Fly, has been initiated as a means of developing newer flight
vehicle concepts, advanced missions, system integration methodologies etc. Following figures
highlight some of the studies carried out in this category.

Figure 17 Instrumentation Package Figure 18 CASDE Flying Platform

Figure 19 Solar Powered Mini Aircraft Figure 20 Miniature Videography Platform

In addition, Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) was identified as an important core

activity of CASDE in Phase I, in the broad area of system design, with main objectives as; (i) to act

10
as a repository of information on MDO and create/increase awareness about MDO amongst the
industry; (ii) be a work centre for optimization and software aspects of MDO and (iii) study issues
of integrating conceptual design with some aspects of preliminary design by bringing in higher
levels of analysis fidelity along with formal optimization at the early design phase. In tune with
these aims, MDO literature has been collected; a special interest group in MDO has been created
and a number of workshops have been organized; a library of software tools for optimization has
been established and a number of design optimization studies of aerospace interest have been
carried out through student projects, along with development of a software framework for MDO.
Figures showing important elements from some typical studies are given below.

Awareness Creation & Publications In view of the fact that awareness creation was an
important aspect of CASDE functioning during Phase-I, a large number of workshops/ seminars/
Short-term courses etc. have been conducted. In addition, CASDE has organized a large number
of brainstorming sessions, with active participation from interested scientists and researchers from
aerospace and non-aerospace organizations, in order to (1) sharpen focus on what needs to be
done and (2) work out methodologies for achieving the objectives. These brainstorming sessions
have proved effective in identifying focused activities of CASDE.

Many publications have also come out of the various activities. CASDE has also attracted a large
number of distinguished visitors and CASDE faculty and staff have been invited to give special
lectures in various organizations. A consolidated list of all these activities is given in Annexure-IX

(For more details on the various activities of CASDE during Phase-I, kindly visit the website
http://www.casde.iitb.ac.in ).

The AR&DB Centre for Aerospace Systems Design and Engineering (CASDE) was set up in 1998
through an initiative from the Aeronautical R&D Board, for promoting the practices of Systems
Design & Engineering, among the various DRDO and Aerospace organizations, pursuing various
aerospace related projects of National importance.

The main charter of the Centre was three folds; (1) to put in place an M. Tech. programme in the
Systems Design and Engineering, (2) to set up a contemporary modelling and simulation
laboratory, (3) to create awareness through workshops, seminars, short courses etc., among the
aerospace professionals about various systems design and systems engineering related
procedures and methodologies and (4) to carry out generic system level studies to demonstrate
possible benefits of these practices. Phase-I of CASDE has operated from August 1998 to March
2004, at a total cost of Rs. 188 Lakhs and has achieved all the above stated objectives with a fair
degree of success.

A consolidation of the gains from Phase-I and upgradation of some of the activities to the next
higher level, are the some of the activities that are to be pursued in Phase-II starting April 2004.
