INTRODUCTION:
Romantic relationship is one in which you can truly be yourself with someone
who you respect and by whom you are respected in return. It is an emotional
connection which binds two people in love.
According to “Teenage Research Unlimited”, half of all teens have been in a
dating relationship and nearly one-third of all teens have been in a serious
relationship.
According to a study, an average 13-20 year old sent and received 1742 text
messages per month.
Adolescents of today’s generation become more interested in romantic
relationships in order to experience feelings of companionship, love, happiness
and positive self-esteem but just as a coin has two sides, the dark side of romantic
relationships also needs to be brought to light which includes stress, worries,
social and non-social sacrifices, increased dependence of a person on his or her
partner and decreased focus on studies.
Thus, the aim of this project is to find if there is any effect of romantic
relationships on the academic performance of teenagers and if there is an effect,
is it positive or negative and what is the magnitude of the effect?
In order to achieve the aim of the project, a research has been conducted in 100
students of a school of Dehradun of the age group of 15-18 years and the results
obtained have been carefully elaborated in the project.

SUGGESTIONS:
A Romantic Relationship is an alliance of two souls who try to
complement each other for their betterment. It is full of love and
affection for each other. When you have a romantic relationship with
someone, you share attitudes, visions, dreams, strengths and
vulnerabilities with that person. Also, there is some kind of mutual
support between you and your partner and both of you help each other
grow. However, the research conducted by me as elaborated in this
project shows that Romantic Relationships nowadays are producing
adverse effects on the academic lives of teenagers and are not leading
to their betterment.

It is suggested that those teenagers who are taking their relationships

casually should reconsider their decision and continue only if they have
love and respect for their partner because a particular relationship may
be casual for one person but serious for the other person and for that
person, a breakup may lead to disastrous conditions such as depression
and suicide. Further, being in a relationship should not be considered as
a status symbol as it is being considered nowadays because a
relationship is a pious bond and its meaning should not be destroyed by
only making it a symbol of status.
The most important result which I have come across during the
research is that the teenagers who were in Romantic Relationships
experienced a decline in their concentration power and grades and for
majority of the students, Romantic Relationships had “somewhat
distracting” effect on their studies and led to a decrease in their study
time. Some students even bunked their lectures to spend time with
their partners. This cannot be considered as a positive effect of being in
a relationship at all and I feel that a balance should be maintained
between studies and the time which a person has to give to his or her
partner and studies should not be sacrificed for relationships at such a
young age when a person should concentrate on building his or her
career. An easy solution can be that both the partners study together
and motivate each other apart from pointing out each other’s mistakes
so that they can excel in academics as well.

At last, I would like to suggest to all the teenagers to get the best
qualities and hidden talents out of your partner and understand and
embrace the true meaning of the word “Love”.
