“Did you know that various paint colors can help the body heal itself? For example, red often helps
depressed people regain vigor. And green has been shown to relieve stress.”

Paint is an amazing substance that allows us to do all kinds of things. From fences to
landscaping, to redecorating and more, painting has become synonymous with weekend projects.
But given all the information we know about how people use paint, it remains a magical substance
that comes in many forms.

From our previous seminar entitled “I C UR TRUE COLORS: Innovations and current
trends, understanding and exploring the paint industry”, held last October 23, 2018 at the OZ
Conference room, we were gathered to listen to a talk from an alumnus who is now working as a
technical representative from Boysen Philippines, Engr. Gatbonton. As a chemical engineering
student, it is vital for us to have knowledge regarding paints especially its existing innovations.
Boysen Philippines is the leading manufacturer of paint in the country who has also proven itself
as the industry leader in product innovation with its constant development of new products to suit
specific market needs, especially in environment friendly paints. The seminar gave us insights
about the company’s innovative products as of year and they call it Green Products. These products
reduce and eliminate the use and generation of substances harmful to human health and the
environment. It was good to hear from the speaker that Boysen is creating and developing such
products. One of these is the Boysen KNOxOUT. The said paint contains ultrafine titanium oxide,
that absorbs energy from light and transforms ordinary water vapor into hydroxyl and peroxyl free-
radicals at the surface of the TiO2. These free-radicals, created in billionths of a second, become
the reactive species that break down noxious air pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) that
come into contact with the surface. Harmful NOx gas is converted to nitric acid that is rapidly
neutralized by alkaline calcium carbonate particle in the paint, producing harmless quantities of
calcium nitrate and negligible amounts of carbon dioxide and water. Calcium nitrate is water
soluble and easily removed from the film, leaving a fresh surface ready to engage the next pollutant
to come into contact with the film. And what’s amazing about this product is that the ultrafine
TiO2 is not consumed in the reaction, but is merely a catalyst that continuously generates free
radicals as long as there is sufficient light, air and moisture. Additionally, this reaction gives the
paint self-cleaning and anti-bacterial properties. I was amazed by this product and what it can offer
in the environment especially for the prevention of global warming. Another product that was also
introduced to us is the Boysen Cool Shades. This paint is a heat reflective colored roof coating that
is water-based & has low VOC. It utilizes the technology of infrared-reflecting pigments that repel
infrared light before it turns into heat. To maintain the heat reflective effect over time. This
innovation uses Infrared Reflective Pigments that reduces heat build up from our roofs. This is
very helpful in our country knowing that we have a tropical climate and experiencing extreme heat
everyday.

Kudos to Boysen for creating and developing green products that greatly suit the Philippine
setting. As a chemical engineering student, I want to be part of such great innovations that will
contribute for the country’s progress. And as of the moment, I am really excited to see what lay in
store for the company as well as the paint industry.
