Type - 2 :Theory Questions

1. While performing some experiments in IUPAC laboratory scientist founded a new chemical reaction - Reaction of
Lithium Peroxide with Carbon dioxide to give Lithium Carbonate and Oxygen

They named this reaction 'Artificial Photosynthesis' because this gave oxygen as a by-product. They prepared a model named :

PROJECT : SCCECP-Smart City Carbon Emission Control Program

The main objective of this project was to control carbon dioxide emission by reacting the excessive amount of Carbon dioxide
with Lithium Peroxide to restore the levels of Carbon dioxide of oxygen in the atmosphere. They introduced this model in IUPAC
international summit 2016 where one of the scientist Mr. X told about pollution in his area -

" I founded that suddenly in my area where there was 1000L of pure air ,concentration of CO2 (by volume) has increased from
0.039% to 0.146% while concentration of Oxygen has decreased from 20.946% to 20.839%. "

i. Write a balanced chemical equation for above reaction.

ii. In the above reaction the oxidizing agent is _______________.
iii. How much will the required amount of Lithium Peroxide will cost Mr. X if its rates are 0.06$ per 1000 moles?

2. One day professor John was describing Mc- Arthur Forest Cyanide Process . He told -
"Mc- Arthur Forest Cyanide Process is used for leaching of Silver. Finely powdered native silver is treated with
0.5(w/w) solution of NaCN, with a continuous current of air. As a result silver dissolves in NaCN solution by forming its
complex cyanides. The impurities do not react with NaCN and hence remain insoluble and are separated through
filtration process. Au is recovered from its complexes by the use of Zinc metal. Zn displaces Ag from their complexes."
One of his student Dane formed the equations for reactions involved :-
𝑥𝐴𝑔 + 𝑧𝑁𝑎𝐶𝑁 + 𝑂2 + 𝑦𝐻2 𝑂 → 𝑦𝑁𝑎 𝐴𝑔 𝐶𝑁 2 + 𝑥𝑁𝑎𝑂𝐻
RECOVERY:
𝑍𝑛 + 𝑦𝑁𝑎 𝐴𝑔 𝐶𝑁 2 → 𝑁𝑎2 [𝑍𝑛 𝐶𝑁 4 ] + 𝑦𝐴𝑔
i. From the above equations find the value of x, y and z.

excess of oxygen and water?

3. Aryan Mishra is a student of IIT Pawai in Chemicals . One day he went to a chemical factory with his professor Mr.
Ankur Sharma. When he was talking to the Factory owner Mr. Sachin Khare, Mr. Khare told him about the role of
Sulphur Dioxide in Claus process as an oxidizing agent. This reaction is widely used in oil refineries. Here Sulphur
Dioxide is reduced by Hydrogen Sulphide to give elemental Sulphur.
Aryan discussed with Mr. Ankur how to use this method in commercial production of elemental Sulphur. Mr. Ankur
suggested him that he can lay done a SO2 pipeline within the crust at the depth of 2 Km. He can make Tanks containing
rotten vegetables and fruits such hat it can give pure and constant supply of H2S (at a depth of 0.8 Km from ground). First
SO2 pipeline must be opened followed by H2S pipeline after 't' seconds. They will together react to give elemental
Sulphur which will deposit in the Junction reactor(0.9 Km from H2S tank and 1.2 Km from SO2 pipeline opening) and
H2O vapours will escape out from the opening.

4. There are some substances which at low concentrations behave as normal strong electrolytes but at higher concentrations
exhibit colloidal behavior due to the formation of aggregated particles. The aggregated particles thus formed are called
micelles. These are also known as associated colloids. Soap molecule is an example of associated colloids. Soap is sodium
salt of a higher fatty acid and may be represented as RCOO- Na+ e.g., sodium stearate viz.CH3(CH2)16COO. Na+ which is
a major component of many bar soaps. When dissolved in water, it dissociates into RCOO- and Na+ ions. The RCOO-
ions, however, consist of two parts i.e., long hydrocarbon chain R (also called non-polar 'tail') which is hydrophobic
(water repelling) and the polar group COO-. (also called polar-ionic 'head') which is hydrophilic (water loving). The

RCOO- lons are, therefore, present on the surface with their COO-. groups in water and the hydrocarbon chains R staying
away from it, and remain at the surface, but at higher concentration these are pulled into the bulk of the solution and
aggregate in a spherical form with their hydrocarbon chains pointing towards the centre with COO -- part remaining
outward on the surface. An aggregate thus formed is known as Ionic micelle. These micelles may contain as many as upto
100 such ions.

7. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is involved in several important biological and environmental processes. CO2 is used in
photosynthesis to make glucose (C6H12O6) and O2(g). The energy required to produce 1 mol of glucose is 2800 kJ. It is
estimated that the net average amount of CO2 fixed by photosynthesis on the landmass of the Earth is 370 g per square
meter per year. All carbon atoms produced are converted into glucose. CO2 is also the final oxidation product of all
carbon-based fuels; its increase in the atmosphere is causing global warming. The metabolism of glucose yields CO 2(g)
and H2O(l) as the final products. Heat released in the process is converted to useful work with about 70% efficiency. The
excess CO2 produced by the metabolic processes in a human body is exhaled. The expired air normally contains 30.0
mmHg (SI unit: 1 atm = 760 mm Hg, 1 mm Hg = 133.3 Pa) of CO2 at 37°C. A simple test for CO2 in the breath is carried
out by blowing the expired air into a limewater (a saturated solution of Ca(OH)2(s)) to turn it milky. A very useful property
of CO2 is its ability to react with potassium superoxide KO2(s) to generate O2(g) which can be used in oxygen masks. Based
on the above information, answer the following questions. (molar mass (g•mol-1): H = 1, C = 12, O = 16; gas constant R
= 8.314 J•mol-1•K-1 (or 0.082 L•atm•mol-1•K-1); gravitational acceleration g = 9.8 m•s-2)
