Describe:

The name of the painting is ¨The Great wave¨ and it is by hokusai. It was said to be created
during 1830-1831. This painting uses many of the elements of art like lines. Lines is one of the
most crucial elements because they made it seem that the wave was moving and falling. The
lines of the wave give a dramatic effect that they will hit the oats and who knows what will
happen to the sailors. The space was used in a creative way because it forced the eye to go where
the big wave is which is one the left side of the painting. The whole painting is focusing on the
water and the people. It shows a real story going on that happened in mount fuji. But it is not.
Value was a huge part in making the painting dramatic. The shades start off light at the top but is
the follow the wave down ti shows it gets darker and that has a big meaning because it gives us a
sense of fear and great power.

Organization:
The balance of color and value is not equal. There is more of a certain color(blue) into the
bottom of the waves. While, there is mainly white on the top of the waves it was mainly white. It
was to represent or give out a scary tone. For the movement, not much is shown but it does direct
our eyes to only one part of the painting and that is important because that was the main focus or
the artist was trying to do. There is one wave which is bigger than the rest which can have a
deeper meaning. A pattern that I can see in the painting would be the waves, they are shown up
alot. Starting from the left and ending at the right they are presented time and time again.

Interpret:

The mood I get from this painting is fear because its showing how little we actually are
compared to nature. Nature is this strong and huge the whole us humans are just specks in the
world. Mother Nature is something that their is around the world, there may be humans all
around but it won't ever compare to nature itself. The way I know that the artist meant this is
because he is showing the waves being huge, according to a video they were about 34 ft, waves
that were casted over the small humans on boats. It was showing what nature can really do when
it gives it all. Nature can be a very beautiful thing but no matter how beautiful it may be it is a
very dangerous thing and can harm anyone anywhere.

Evaluate:
This painting shows originality and uniqueness because it was showing Mount Fuji during the
1800s but people were not familiar with it. Which is why it came a huge impact on the world.
Especially on European art. If it was not for this artist then the art world is we know it would be
different because we would not have his influence. The artist is very well known, If Hokusai had
never been introduced to the world of Europe many global art presented today would have been
different. He was a huge influence on Europe because he was a father figure for much of the
western modernism. One of the greatest from Japan as well. This artwork is very influential
because if it weren't for this painting then the people would not know Mount Fuji. The painting
even has its own emoji. His art is from the 1800s but yet is still part of our lives in 2018. It’s in
merchandise all everywhere and even implied in social media. Other paintings during this time
did not have the same impact on the world like The Great wave.
