INTRODUCTION

India is rising, our country is zooming a head in all fields

that count at break neck speed. The boom in economy innovative technologies
and improved infrastructure are testament to that. Girls and young women have
produced considerable contribution to this progress, with them taking up every
possible job. From preparing the morning breakfast to sending the orbiter to Mars,
they have made their presence felt in every sphere of life. Yet in every strata of the
Indian society, they are still remains a cloud of apprehension and insecurity when a
girl child is born.
Discrimination against a girl begins at her conception and shapes
up to be the monster she has to fight every moment of her walking existence. Her
second rate citizenship is reflected in the denimal of fundamental needs and rights
and in such harmful attitudes and practices as a preference for sons, female genetal
multilation, incest, sexual exploitation, domestic abuse, discrimination, early
marriage, less food and less access to education.
PANDIT JAWAHARLAL NEHRU had opined that “Women
empowered means Mother India empowered” and to have empowered women in
feature we need to empower our girl child today. In ancient Indian societies, girl and
women enjoyed ample freedom and respect. Present day champions of women
excellence in India are numourous from a women Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, to
the heroic deeds of Kiran Bedi, the first IPS officer of India, there should be no doubt
that our women.
Preexisting low social position of girls and young women. They are
still considered second rate citizens who do not have the right to basic freedom and
pre villages that men enjoy. Their roles are primarily fixed a domestic help, tools for
pleasure of their men and instruments for procreation. A girl child is an economic
burden is basically due to the prevalence of dowry system still abundant in the
society. Many families view every girl being born as a potential source of drainage
for their hard earned money.
Absence of education is also a contributing factor where girls and
young women are continuously being blamed for giving birth to girl child. Lack of
education and exposer to world keeps them from realizing the potential of their girl
child.
India has been termed as one of the most dangerous place in the world
for a girl child to be born. In the most current data released by the UNDESA, for 150
countries for over a span of 40 years, has revealed that India and China are the only
two countries in the world where female infant mortality is higher than male infant
mortality in the 2000’s. The Government has introduced plans targeted at countering
the common psyche of people regarding girls as burdens. The Balika Samrudhi
Yojana have been started by the Government in order to help the girl child proposer
and not to be perceived as an economic burden. Campaigns like the “Save the girl
child” and the more recent “Beti bachao, Beti padao” have been started to create
awareness against atrocities faced by the girl child.
OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT RESEARCH STUDY

 To study the contribution of girls and young women in human environment

development.
 To study the male and female development approach to evaluation of
economic development.
 To study the girls and young women’s capacity to survive the human
environment.
 The particular study is an attempt to know the present status of girls and young
women and their activities which affect the environment.
 The present study is to assess the awareness among girls and young women
about their role and ability in environment protection and social development.
AIM OF THE PROJECT RESEARCH STUDY
When we think of gender we have to think and study many demensions rather than
one, because we cannot find proper inference by studying only one side.
In this research study, I have focused on male and female inequality relevant of
economic, politics, social activities, educational part and their development status of
girls and young women in society.
The aim of this research study is that girls and young women must get the equal
benefits of health facilities, political, economic, social freedom and what other
facilities they can get from the human environment.
Now a days girls are shining in everywhere all over the world. But still not ready to
accept their equality somewhere. I have concentrated the status on girls and young
women in India and their goodness and valuable contributions to the human
environment.
WHY THIS TOPIC IS SELECTED FOR PROJECT RESEARCH STUDY
We are in the 21st century and witnessing the
improvement and science and technology has taken human being on a different
platform. Our technologies touched in National level but still girls and young women
equalities remains as it is. We are not going to stop here and many amazing
developments would follow in years to come.

However one particular segment which still needs to be

properly attended is gender equality. Girls in many part of the country are still
waiting for proper justice to their existence. This is possible when the topic female
equality is also given prime importance and seriousness same as the importance given
to the development of science and technology or importance given to improve GDP.

A very recent report appeared in Sakal a newspaper from

th
Maharashtra dated 14 June 2012 throwing light on the plights women in India is
loud enough to bring forth the abilities faced by Indian women.

Following are some of the salient features of the report

 Girls and young women here do not get equal rights even vote and drive
vehicles.
 The state of girls and young women is depended on the basis of wealth and
social status.
 The problem early age marriage, dowry abuses at home and focus killing still
exist everywhere (not only in India).
 There is improvement in girls and young women in urban areas. But state of
rural girls and young women are still in difficulties.
 Delhi and nearby areas are with high incidence of female kidnapping and
gang rapes.
 Newspapers publish news about the abuses on women including women
trading.
 Many abuses with females are socially accepted.
51% males and 54% of females have approved the abusive treatment given to the
girls.
The survey conducted by Thomson Routers foundation has ranked
th
India on 19 place in 19 countries surveyed. The first ranked in Canada, even
Brazil(11th ), Turkey (12th ) and Indonesia (17th ) are ranked better than India.
Girls should have get rights of decision equal chances in the system of
social, economic, political and educational fields as equal to men. She should have
get equal benefits and honor. This will be called gender equality. If all this happened
reality after that we can say there is gender equality.
DELIMITATIONS OF THE RESEARCH STUDY
 The study will be delimited to the village areas of Jalna (Maharashtra).

 Further only 80 respondents of village girls and young women will be

participated for the research study.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
To study the girls and young women’s different roles with human environment. For
this purpose a survey will be conducted in three villages from Jalna Maharashtra,
through an outreach program with girls and young women with the help of
questionnaire. During the survey 80 respondents from each village Deregaon,
Jamvadi and Devalgaon Raja respectively.

For the collection of particular data a questionnaire will be prepared involving

various aspects such as social, economics, parent consciousness, learner’s interest,
communications, teaching and learning etc.

The particular data will be used to prepare the report from which inference will be
drawn and conclusion will be arrived.

INTRODUCTION

There is the major role of girls and young women in India. She is playing a
role of four fold status role sequences. There were her role is daughter, wife, house
wife and mother. The girl whose status and role traditionally was well defined and
almost fixed in the society, is now experiencing far reaching changes. The girl in
modern times is entering into certain new fields that were unknown by the girls
sphere of role sets. They are actively participating in social, economic and political
activities.

The growing worldwide demand for resources is threatening the world

environmental health to an unprecedented extent unless new policies are set in place,
this situation could have devastating implications for human development. Girls and
women’s can be very active participants in the defense of the environment and stop
or even reverse the degradation of our natural resources.

At a worldwide level, there is a growing awareness of the need and importance

of making girls contribution to the identification of environmental problem, as well
as in the planning of activities geared at the sustainable development of their
communities.

Girls roles as home managers, economic providers and their role in

reproduction too. Girls and young women’s are susceptible to health problems and
hazards in several situations.
Although for a long time girls have been considered passive recipients of aid
rather than active participants in development, their role is crucial both to the
economies of developing countries and to the future of environment. In that regard
environmental educators and motivators for change, girls are key agents in the
processes leading to a development of the planet. Now the girls are rising up from a
Nation, they are the strongest voice that can be heard and its voice that cannot
be silenced.
The girl child is a biological female offspring from birth to 18 years of age.
During this period, the young girl is totally under the care of adult who may be
parents, guardians, or elder siblings. It is also a period when the girl child is
malleable, builds and develops her personality and character. She is very dependent
on others on who she models her behavior, through observation, repetition and
limitations. Her physical, mental, social, spiritual and emotional development start
and progress to get to the peak at the young adult stage.

Awareness among girl child and young women about their role in environment
protection.

Discrimination against girls and young women in India has been going on since
ages now. Even today, there are several sections of the Indian society where the girl
child is treated as a burden. While several privilages are given to the boys; girls are
often restricted to the confines of house and given very little or no opportunities to
learn and grow in life. It is a matter of great shame that causes of female infanticide
are still reported. As per the figure of 2011 census, there are just 918 girls in India for
1000 boys. In such a scenario, the role of the Government and NGO’s becomes all
the more important in order to ensure that girls are allowed to be born and flourish in
life. Support charities like save the girl child to contribute your bit in spreading
awareness about the importance of girl child.

Why it is important to save and educate the girl child.

In order to achieve true women empowerment, it is important that we begin with
the girl children. This is because girls of today are the women of tomorrow. The role
of social welfare organizations is critical here as it is not possible for the Government
to reach every nook and corner of the country. As the aware citizens, we can support
organizations which work for the eradication of the female infanticide and women
empowerment.
Donations to them serve two purposes driving change in the society and providing
tax benefits to the donor. Some women carve a positive self -image and increase
their confident level.
 Enabling them to develop the ability to think critically.

 Ensuring that they have equal participation in decision making, whether its
in the family or at the community level

 Providing economic independence to women.

The mindset that a girl child is a liability needs to be changed and

requires happening at the grass root level. While spreading awareness is
critical, there is a need of stricter laws in place which deter people from
resorting to female foeticide.

The role of education is extremely important here and goes a long

way in empowering women. And the process of education has to begin early in
life. More and more girl children need to be sent school, provided quality and
holistic education. Numerous benefits come with educating girl child the right
way. Educated girls are able to take the right decision in life. For eg; when an
educated child fall sick, she will have better understanding and awareness to
avail proper health care services. At the same time, a society in which girls are
educated will see less child marriages, decreased level of poverty and
heightened participation of women in socio economic processes. Educating a
girl child has far reaching impacts. It is rightly said that when a women is
educated an entire generation benefits from it.
”Betti Bahao, Betti Padao” Scheme (BBBP) of the Indian Government
literally meaning “Educate the girl child, Save the girl child” This
scheme is intended to generate massive awareness, important of
quality ofwelfare services for females and helping the girls and
women access these services better, introduced in October 2014.
This scheme goes on to address the declining child sex ratio in the
country. But after spreading awareness about their rights and
duties and taking cognizance of their surrounding they
consciously tried to race voice against environment degradation.
Girls had launched number of movement of demanding better
protection of natural resources and environment conservation.
Like in India, Amrita Devi had sacrificed their life for protection
of the trees that was going to fell down by commercial logger in
Uttarakhand. Other woman like Vandana Shiva have also
contributed in environment conservation and protection growing
population and technological advancement are continuously
putting a strain on the environment and on country’s natural
resources.

More than 70% of the Indian population is rural

based. Biomass plays a crucial role in meeting daily survival
needs of the vast majority of the rural households.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research methodology is a way to systematically investigate the

research problems. This include various steps in conducting the research in
a proper and a logical way. It is essential to define the problem. It shows
objectives and aims clearly in the research. The research design provides
the details regarding what, where, when, how much and by what means
enquiry is initiated. Every step of research must be planned and designed
carefully so that the researcher without getting confused at the steps of
research. The research must have a good and proper planning of what is to
be done, what data is needed, what data collecting tools are to be employed
and how the data is to be statistically analyzed and interpreted. There are a
number of approaches to the design of studies and research projects all of
which may be equally.

Research is a systematic attempt to obtain answers to meaningful

questions about phenomenon or events thoughts the application of scientific
procedures. It an objective, impartial, empirical and logical analysis and
recording of controlled observation that may led to the development of
generalization, principles or theories resulting to some extent in prediction
and control of events that may be consequences or causes of specific
phenomenon.

Research designs are closely linked to investigators objectives. They

specify that research designs are either descriptive or experimental in
nature. Research design tells us how to plan various phases and procedures
related to the formulation of research effort (Ackoff Russel,1961),
(Miller,1989) has defined research design, “as the planned sequence of the
entire process involved in conducting a research study”. Kothari observes
“research design stands for advance planning of the method to be adapted
for collecting the relevant data and the techniques to be used in their
research and availability of staff, time and money”.
In this way selecting a particular is based on the purpose of the piece
of the research to be conducted. This design deals with selection of subjects,
selection of data gathering devises, the procedure of making observations
and the types of statistical analysis to be employed in interpreting data
relationship.

Keeping in view the requirements for an adequate design as discussed

above the researcher formulated an appropriate design for the purpose of
present study. The details of the study of methodology mentioned here.
METHODOLOGY OF THE STUDY

This study is an attempt to know the present status of girls and

young women from our society.

Two data collection techniques were employed, these includes

questionnaire and discussion with village girls and young women through an
outreach program. During the program 80 participants from village of
Devalgoan, Jamvadi and Deregaon girls and young women participated
respectively.

The overall purpose of the survey was to understanding of the

situation that many girls and young women facing today’s society. This survey
was designed to obtain a broad view of the political, social and economic
concerns and issues facing many girls and young women today in the project
areas. To collect the data used questionnaire on different areas like social,
economic, Parents consciousness, learner’s interest, communication etc.

The researcher personally visited the villages selected for the study
and collected the require data through an outreach program. The members of
Hope of Bridge helped to arrange the outreach program for providing general
information and conducting the discussion. The respondents were contacted
their residence and the data were collected through discussion.
FEAR AND SIGMA

It surfaced from the survey that girls and young women often
spend much of their time fighting to secure their rights to participation severely
creping their capacity to fully contribute in governance. While girls and young
women may have successfully secure their place in governance, they face
incredible obstacles as they exercise newfound participatory right. The
experience of girls and young women in governance are diverse, but the
common factor remains the stigmatization with which have often met.

On several topics, the responses from girls and young women were
inconsistent with those of the boys and young men. Boys and young men
perceived their actions as encouraging the girls and young women who
experienced this as intimidation. Boys and young men responded that they
have girls and young women opportunities, but that they are too shy, scared or
don’t know enough to speak up.

Girls and young women responded that they were not given the
time, and often laughed at or criticized for saying the wrong thing. The study
reveal that although women are rarely involved in decision making capacity.
LACK OF CONFIDENCE

Lack of confidence is one of the reason for girls and young women
are facing today’s human environment. With confidence and determination
girls and young women can reach the highest level of many areas. That is why
girls and young women should believe in themselves and should do away with
the wide spread perception than men have to their leader.

Girls and young women are equal to and have the same potencial as
boys and young men, but only if they can fight for their rights. As noted that
girls and young women are very good campaigners and organizers, but fear
sometimes prevents from participating in many human environmental
activities.
INFERENCE: In this project study most of the girls and young women stated
that, they have very less confidence in facing many social problems. Because
of men commanding nature girls and women losing their confidence level
everywhere. She should know their ability and capacity to speak up. Girls and
young women should believe in themselves and should do away with the
widespread perception than men have to be their leader. Girls and young
women remain underrepresented in decision making, at local as well as
national level. Most of the girls and young women responded that, they are not
come forward anywhere to make a decision. The gender roles in the societies,
which relegate girls and young women to the private sphere, boys and young
men are hesitate to put girls and young women up front for fear of not
achieving expected objectives and sometimes they are rarely taken into
consideration.

INFERENCE:
Illiteracy was mentioned by most of the girls and young women as a
problematic element. Societies are on the whole based on roles divided according to
sex which relegates girls and young women to the private sphere. From a young age,
young girls are encouraged and trained for household works, how to take care of their
young brothers and sisters, they are prepared to demonstrate calmness, patience,
obedience, home loving habits among others.
RECOMMENDATIONS

To enhance girls and young women’s participation in environmental

management for sustainable development the following recommendations are
proffered.
Girls and young women should be encouraged to participate in committees on
environmental protection projects, programs and policies to address gender
imbalanced in decision making.
Girl’s access to land other resources should be ensured and not undermined.
The Government will have to come in this respect, to ensure girls equity regarding
access to and control of resources.
Environmental education is required for the every girls for sustainable development.
Environmental education will produce change in girl’s attitude and courage, as well
as impact specific knowledge on the every girls.
Educated girls will contribute more significantly to bridging the gap between
environment and development of our nation.
Empowerment of girls in relation to the protection of the environment must be
recognized and sustained.
Most of the young women entrepreneurs are started their business under sole
proprietorship and small scale. So that Government has to aid their business and help
those to start large scale business.
Most of them are getting their finance bank and financial institutions. So that
Government has to take initiative and supportive role for both banks and women
entrepreneurs.
Government has to conduct special training programs and development programs for
their improvement of living.
The school management should arrange medical checkup of girls and proper
arrangement of physical and health education should be made.
There is the need of counselling in each area of girls and young women’s problem.
Most of them are from poor socio, economic conditions. So a balanced diet should be
provided for the physical development.
Girls should be encouraged for their creative abilities through music, dance, art and
crafts.
Everyone should be aware of the importance of education. Motivate the girls and
young women to get the proper education.
SUMMARY OF THE RESEARCH STUDY

Girls and young women have become aware of their rights abilities
and work situations. However the middle class girls and women are not eager to alter
their fear of social backlash. The progress is more visible among upper class families
in urban cities.

This research study was focused on girls and young women. Any understanding of
Indian women of their identity and especially of their role taking and breaking new
paths, will be incomplete without a walk down the corridors of Indian history where
women have paused, lived and internalized various role models. Some have taken
entrepreneurship roles where some have opted for employment, some in entertained
fields and some for leadership roles etc.
CONCLUSION

There is an urgent need to change this archaic mid set of the patriarchal
Indian society which views girls as liabilities. It needs to be established that girls are
in no way less than boys. When given the right chances to nature their talent and
skills they have it in them to excel in different areas of life. It is therefore imperative
that both Government and Non-Government organizations work in cohesion to
spread the message of saving and educating the girl child. Should conduct awareness
programs for girls and young women to realize the power of their talent.

Women constitute almost half of the total population in India but they are
not enjoying their freedoms, equalities, privileges etc. Since implementation of
planning in India several policies and approaches were made to reduce inequalities
between women and men. As a result a shift from ‘welfare’ to ‘development’ to
‘improvement’ to human development.
