STAGES

I. Warm up 5 min.

that foster a positive classroom atmosphere.
II. Lead-in 5 min.
T tells the SS that the aim of the lesson is to read a text for general meaning (skim) and for specific
information (scan) and to speak about holidays.
On the board there are pictures faced down. SS should turn each picture and guess what they represent.
(sunscreen, camera, waterproof jacket, sunhat, binoculars, map, insect repellent, first aid kit, suitcase).
They work in groups to decide which of the items they might need to take with them on different types of
holidays: a beach holiday, sightseeing in Europe, a safari, mountaineering. Once they have made their choices, they
should report back to the class, giving reasons for their choices.
a beach holiday: sunscreen, sunhat (protection), binoculars (watch ships, dolphins), suitcase (clothes),
camera (memories), first aid kit (bites, stings)

a safari: insect repellent, sunhat, sunscreen, binoculars, first aid kit, suitcase, camera
mountaineering: first aid kit (falls, injuries), binoculars (views), camera, sunscreen.

Anticipated problems and solutions

P: Maybe the SS can’t give reasons for all the items.
S: T encourages SS to talk by avoiding embarrassing situations.

III. Activity 1 Reading (scan) 10 min

Students read the text quickly in order to find out what dangers are linked to the temperature.
The dangers linked to the temperature are:
- heat exhaustion from high temperatures and using up a lot of water and salt
- heat stroke from exposure to very high temperatures for a long time

surprised them.

Anticipated problems and solutions

P: SS may not read all the text after they think they have found the answer.
S: T encourages SS to continue reading to the end.

content, as well as whether the SS found the topic interesting or not, what they got out of the lesson, whether the
language practice was useful, whether they enjoyed the activities, etc.
