Select one of the pieces we have prepared for our upcoming performance ("Bound for the Rio Grande",

"Tres Canciones", "This Old Hammer", "Afternoon on a Hill"; "Little Shop" is also an option for those of you
in Play Production) and prepare written program notes for the piece. Your program notes should include
the following three sections:

1. Composer information: Identify the composer, discuss their background in music and their major
musical influences. If possible, include quotes from the composer about the composition, their musical
philosophy, or their thoughts on music education. (8 points)

any relevant details such as key, tempo or meter. Discuss any historical significance it may have, its place

significantly styled after. (8 points)

3. Personal Comments: Discuss your personal thoughts about the piece, drawing specific examples from
the music and connecting them to your reflections or observations about the piece. (8 points)

You may complete this assignment in any number of paragraphs you think appropriate; however, it is
unlikely the assignment can be adequately completed in less than three. See the grading rubric for more
details regarding mechanics and APA citation requirements. Your work should include at least 2 research
sources. Wikipedia is a great starting point, however it should not be relied upon as your only source of
information. Avoid using it as a source, but rather check the references at the end of the Wikki to verify
the articleʼs information. Unreferenced Wiki articles are not acceptable sources of research!!

You MUST use in-line parenthetical references in the body of your paper to indicate where you got your
information!

Tres Canciones de Los Elementos

Victor C. Johnson is a composer born and raised in Dallas, Texas. He attended the University of
Texas in Arlington, Texas, where he studied for music education. When he was in Sophomore
year, 1994, he composed his first choir. He has won the awards for, “Outstanding Music
Freshman” in 1997 and, “Outstanding Musician” in 2001.

The song is comprised of several songs in one song. The three songs are, “Escuchar al Viento”,
“La lluvia”, and “Fuego”. The song are made to sound like their element and all of the lyrics are
in Spanish. For example, in “Escuchar al Viento” the music is made to sound like wind blowing.
They are also onomatopoeias; escuchar sounds like the the wind blowing and fuego sounds like
fire exploding out of nowhere.

This song is really fun to sing, specially “La lluvia”. But I wish they didn’t make the soprano part
at the beginning “La la la”. When I first heard it, I couldn’t take it seriously and still can’t. It’s like
something you would hear in a horror movie. I do love the part how the music sounds for this
song. I also like how good the soprano part and the alto part sounds together.
