wave”?

• Refers to a new cultural consumption
pattern ( Korean culture) in Asia from
South Korea (especially in Hong Kong,
Taiwan, China, Indonesia, Thailand,
Philippine, Central Asia and Japan)
around the world, where mostly among
the youth.
How Korean wave
dominates
the world?
1. Media
liberalization
• Recent economic crisis in Asia – prefer
the cheaper Korean programming.
• Two satellites broadcasting – NHK
Satellite and Star TV.
• Three Korean television networks –
MBS, KBS and SBS.
• Channel V – create a huge K-pop fan
base in Asia.
• Comparison to Hyundai cars – “pride of
Korea”
• “Learning from Hollywood” slogan.

• Support and responsible in introducing
the culture outside.
• Youth is the „regular‟ customers.
• Easy to access.
3. Nationality
• South Korea is one of Asian countries.
• Representing of Asian values
• Share the same Confucian principles
4.Themes
Korean dramas
– always have happy ending and good-
versus-evil themes.
– two main themes:
a) Melodramas
 center on matters of
love and romance.
 e.g. Winter Sonata
b) Historical dramas
 centered on the legendary
 heroes and extra-ordinary
 kings.
 e.g. Jewel in the Palace
Korean pop songs
- Mixed genres like rap, soul, rock and roll,
techno, punk, hardcore and even ppongjjak.
- invented a unique musical form → rap only
during the verses, singing choruses in a pop
style with dynamic dance movement.
5. Diplomatic Relationship
• Korean pop stars help in improving
Korea‟s foreign relations.
• Examples:
- Korean actor, Jang Dong-gun and
actress Kim Nam-ju have become the
„national stars‟ in Vietnam.
- BoA becomes the cultural
icon for Korea and Japan.
