SEMANTICS

Diva Nabila Arumsari XC

Semantics is one kind of study of meaning, it focuses on study bases of relation
through word, phrases, symbols, and signs. One kind of semantics is linguistic semantics, it
study of meaning to understand human expression through language.

Semantics has a lot of another meaning, sometimes it means connotation between

one word and another. The formal study of semantics connecting with many other field
inquiry including lexicology, syntax, pragmatics, etymology, and others.

The reason of using linguistic semantics is, you can use linguistic semantics for
making references. You can attach a bigger text into smaller units of meaning.

In late 1960, Richard Montague proposed a system for semantics. His first phrase is
“John ate every bagel” it using subject and predicate. And I think is improving into many
other form of phrases.

One word can not stand alone without another word. Like the example is, we use the
word purple it is viewed as compositional, and after we added another word like purple
piano it will turn that word purple is a native speakers.

Model theoretic semantics is a natural language semantics which showed expression

are showed meanings such as individuals, true values, or from one function to another
function. The truth of one sentence will logically make relation to another words.

Formal semantics is another formalized theory which aims to associate natural

language sentences with meta language description of condition under which is true. For
example the sentences is “Sky is blue”. This sentences will be conditionally right, if sky is
really blue. This kind of semantics can be used to know the truth of the sentences.

Lexical and conceptual semantics is an effort to explain properties of argument

structure. Object of this theory is syntatic properties of phrases reflects the meaning of the
words that head them.

Lexical semantics is one kind of a linguistic theory that investigates word meaning.
This theory understands that the meaning of words is fully reflected by it’s content. The
meaning of word is constituted by it contextual relations.

Computational Semantics is focused on the processing of linguistic meaning. In order

to do this concrete algorithms and architecture are described. The algorithms and
archiitecture are also analyzed in term of decidability, time or space complexity, data
structure which is required and then communication protocols.
In computer science, the term semantics refers to te meaning of some languages as
opposed to their form (syntax). Provided rules which is not interpreting the meaning directly.
Semantics of program languages and other languages are important issues and area of study
in computer science like the syntax of a language.

There are so many various way have been developed to describe semantics program
language formally like or building mathematical logic. Operational semantics , denotational
semantics, and Axiomatic semantics. In denotational semantics it is represent the effect o
executing the constructs.

In pyschology, semantic memory is memory for meaning on other words.

So, semantics is really useful in our real life because we can understand another
people, words, signs and everything else, to guide us to be a better person.
