An Addition & Subtraction Hunt!


First Grade Math

Standard MGSE1.OA.1: Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems
involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing,
with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for
the unknown number to represent the problem

Day 1 Addition: Find the Sum!
1 Standard: for Teacher Reference
2 Start the presentation here for students.
3 Tell students the goals that can be achieved in a concise manner.
4 1) Show video.
2) Annotate the problems types mentioned on the whiteboard.
5 1) Say “based on this video, we are going to solve this problem.”
2) Teacher reads the problem aloud.
3) Give students 5 minutes to solve individually.
- It is best to use a small dry-erase board or paper
4) Ask students what type of addition problem they solved.
6 1) Student reads the next problem aloud.
2) Give students 5 minutes to solve individually.
3) Ask students what type of addition problem they solved.
7 1) Give personal technology (tablets or computers) to students
- It is best to use tablets because it is the best way to maintain
academic integrity during this time
2) Students log-in to presentation with the code the teacher displays on the
board.

11 1) Teacher reads the problem aloud to students.


2) Give students 5 minutes to solve individually.
- It is best to use a small dry-erase board or paper
3) Ask students what way of subtraction they used to solve the problem.
12 1) Have students go back to their desks.
2) As students are doing that, teacher sets up quiz page.
3) Teacher tells the students that they are to complete this quiz by
themselves.
4) Teacher reminds students that they can use their whiteboard/paper to
their work but to answer the question on the whiteboard.
5) Encourage students: “you can do this!”
