Strauss Family Reunion to Mark the 75th Yahrzeit of David, Elchanan and Uri

WELCOME SPEECH

Good evening everyone and welcome to this grand family reunion, where we
mark the 75th anniversary of the Strauss Boys deaths.

I’d like to open with giving a special welcome greeting to all those who have
travelled from overseas to join us in marking this special occasion.

From France – Marion, Michel and Camilla Piterman, whom we have never met
before and for whom this is their very first trip ever to Israel.

trip. It’s really appreciated by all the Israeli-based family and especially by the

According to my Whatsapp history, we set up the organizing committee last

year on April 30th, that’s nearly 10 months ago!

It has been a really enjoyable and challenging 10 months, starting from a germ
of an idea to this full program tonight, so I’d like to express my personal thanks
to all of the committee who each contributed many, many hours in the various
areas, whether it be in designing the invitations, sorting out mailing lists,
arranging the hall, dealing with catering, arranging and conducting interviews
for the film we are about to see, working on the editing of the film, translating
the sound track, and also arranging the songs we will sing together at the end
of the evening.

Another person we have to thank, because without her the central part of this
evening would not have been possible, is our film editor – Ellen. G-d knows
how many hours she has spent lovingly cutting, joining and inserting different
pieces of interview into a smooth documentary that I am sure you will soon
agree is a most professionally made production.

We fully intend sending copies to the various archives, especially Yad Vashem –
this is a historical document and you are about to see its premiere. Ellen is only
at the start of her career, but if this product is an example of the quality of her
work, she has a great career ahead of her! Thank you, Ellen!

I would like to point out that in fact the yahrzeit was yesterday 6th Adar,
whereas now it is already the 8th. I want to tell you that one of our research
colleagues in Michelstadt, Ms. Brigitte Diersch very kindly and thoughtfully
went to the Michelstadt Cemetery on Wednesday and lit 3 candles in the boys’
memory on the grave of the Bal-Shem miMichelstadt. We really appreciate
that gesture.

You may have noticed a photographer moving around taking photos while you
were all eating and mingling. While we are watching the film he will be making
magnets of these photos and putting them up on the board. You are welcome
to take copies home as a memento.

As background to this evening, we should note that this is the 3rd time we have
got together to mark the Yahrzeit of David, Elchanan-Herbert and Uri-Michael.

The first gathering was in February 2006, where we marked their 63rd Yahrzeit.
This followed the discovery of details of their lives in Holland, their capture and
their ultimate murder in Sobibor, Poland, during our Roots trip (which I made
with my father) in September 2005.

We all met up again 7 years later in February 2013 to mark their 70th Yahrzeit,
by which time we had made many more discoveries about their lives, mostly
with the help and initiative of Noam.

Meanwhile this all fired up Noam’s imagination and he started a project to

trace the history and movements of all the Strauss siblings before, during and
after the Holocaust. This resulted in him publishing a book on the subject, in
Hebrew, which many of us have received and read.

We felt there was a need to have this book translated into English, so that the
English-speaking part of the family could benefit from it, but also to make it
available to historical archives and libraries around the world. I can tell you
that it is already to be found in the Michelstadt Jewish Museum (which is
located in the shul Grandpa Leo Strauss davened in, in Mauerstrasse) and in
the Frankfurt Jewish Museum.

‫אנגלית יכול להינות ממנן‪ ,‬אך גם לעשות אותו נגיש לארכיונים וספריות ברחבי העולם‪.‬‬
‫אני יכול לספר לכם שניתן כבר למצוא את הספר במוזיאון היהודי במישלשטאדט‬
‫(הממוקם בבית הכנסת בו התפלל גרנדפא ליאו שטראוס ברח' מאוארשטראסה) וגם‬
‫במוזיאון היהודי בפרנקפורט‪.‬‬

‫‪Anyone who hasn’t yet got a copy, either in Ivrit or English, I strongly‬‬
‫‪recommend that they buy a copy. At 40 shekels it’s a “vilde metziah!”.‬‬

‫‪While Noam was researching for this book, he connected the family here for‬‬
‫‪the first time with the Piterman family of France. These are Paul’s family, Paul‬‬
‫‪being Odette and Margot’s brother, who were brought up after the war by‬‬
‫‪Grandma and Grandpa. So we are delighted that Marion and Michel and‬‬
‫‪Camilla have come to join us tonight and I hope that you can cope with our‬‬
‫!‪English‬‬

‫‪He also helped us reconnect with Amanda, Odette’s daughter, who is here‬‬
‫‪tonight with her husband David, and I know this is a very emotional experience‬‬
‫‪for you, as it is for us all to see each other again after decades of separation.‬‬

‫‪Noam even found Margot, who is alive, if ailing, in England, but her memory is‬‬
‫‪as sharp as ever. Noam got special leave from the army to visit her in England‬‬
‫‪where he taped and videoed a 2 hour interview with her, of which we have‬‬
‫‪extracted a few minutes in the film you are about to see.‬‬

Noam also found in Israel the Navon family, formerly Niederman. They are the
descendants of Shimon Navon, formerly Simon Niederman, son of Hedwig ,
who was Grandpa Strauss’s sister.

You should all know that we are here today some 110 people, about 95 of
whom are direct descendants of Grandpa Leo and Grandma Daja Strauss, or
their spouses. And there are another few dozen of their great-grandchildren
who are too young to join us tonight. This is a wonderful statistic considering
the family’s situation in the 1940’s, and we can consider ourselves very blessed
that we are all in touch with one another, sometimes now on a daily basis
thanks to Whatsapp, email and Skype.

In our previous reunions we gave frontal lectures with aid of powerpoint

presentations explaining the family’s history. Tonight we decided to do
something completely different. We have prepared a documentary movie
based on interviews with the 4 surviving sisters, my mother Judy, Miriam, Eva
and Ruth - and with Margot, their cousin, where they talk about what it was
like growing up in the Strauss household during and after the war, what they
knew about what happened, how the family coped, and so on.

I’ll let the movie speak for itself, but I will tell you that it’s about 50 minutes
long. All sound in English has Hebrew subtitles, and all Ivrit sound has English
subtitles.
