Lesson Plan
Name: Pam Harbers Grade/Subject: Grade 1 Subject: Science
Topic: Gingerbread experiment Date: December 12, 2016 Length of Lesson: 30 minutes
General Learning Describe materials and objects that have been observed and manipulated, and identify what was
Outcomes (P.O.S.) done and found out.
Specific Leaning 1. predict what they think will happen or what they might find
Outcomes (P.O.S.) 2. manipulate materials and make observations that are relevant to questions asked
3. describe what was observed, using pictures and oral language
Learning Students will
Objectives 1. Students will make predictions using scientific reasoning
2. students will reflect on their predictions after the experiment has been performed
Materials Gingerbread men
Water
Beaker
Eyedroppers
Closure (7 min.) 1. When all students are finished we will have a class discussion Formal: are students
about what results student got and if their hypotheses were able reflect on their
correct. predictions in order ot
answer the question
“why didn’t the
Gingerbread Man
want to go in the
water?”
Sponge Activity Students will respond to the experiment using their 5 senses. How does •
it feel when it is touched, how does it smell, how does it taste, what

does it look like, and can you hear anything when the water is poured
on (crackling?).
Reflection
I put the gingerbread men on paper towels and the water seeped though and made a bit of a mess so next time I would put the
gingerbread men in a container of some type to make the clean-up easier.
I had an outline of a gingerbread man for student to colour and draw on, but by the end it wasn’t in the shape of a gingerbread
man anymore. Next time I would leave the drawing column blank and let the students draw their own gingerbread man.
I only incorporated two of the five senses in this experiment (sight and touch). Next time I would include all five senses in
the experiment. Have a column for each sense and brainstorm with student’s words that describe each sense and write three
options for them to choose from on the board.
I allotted eight spaces for eight eyedroppers full of water but this was too may times. After about four times the gingerbread
man was already a pile of mush. Next time I would either get bigger gingerbread cookies or reduce the number of eye drops.
