Dear Friend,
Greetings in the precious name of our Lord Jesus Christ. I am so
grateful to God today for all His blessings, His goodness, and mercies towards us.
They are new every morning, the Bible says. Every Thanksgiving I think about the
account in the Bible where the Lord Jesus was headed to Jerusalem and there were
ten men that were lepers. They stood afar off, but lifted up their voices and said,
"Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!" (Luke 17:13). He didn't run over to them. He
didn't lay hands on them. He didn't make any excuses as to why they had this
problem that kept them away from others. He simply said to them, "Go shew
yourselves unto the priests." The Scripture says, "And it came to pass, that as
they went, they were cleansed."
As I was studying this story, I noticed a couple of interesting facts about the
original wording. When they called Him "Master," they recognized already that the
Lord Jesus was the ruler over every area of the kingdom. The Bible says we have
not because we ask not, and we ask and receive not because we ask amiss. We pray
for things that are contrary to God's will sometimes. Or, we pray and expect it to
happen now. Sometimes the Lord has to prepare the hearts of those we are praying
for. These men knew He could change their situation and they called out for mercy.
Whatever He said to them they would immediately obey, for He alone had the
ability to heal and save. It came to pass "...that as they went (or obeyed), they
were cleansed." Not just in body, but I believe also in their spirit. You see, God's
Word is Spirit and life. When it is spoken and obeyed it becomes the life of the
doer. As they obeyed the Word, they were cleansed inside and out!
But this story does not end there. "And one of them, when he saw that he
was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, and fell on his
face at His feet, giving Him thanks: and he was a Samaritan." What makes this
experience even more astounding is that the Jews and Samaritans had no dealings
with each other in those days. The Lord Jesus said He came for the lost sheep of the
house of Israel, but who's to say where these lost sheep were? Only He knows! I
imagine if you were able to go back in this man's genealogy we would find he was
of the house of Israel. I think if some of us were able to go back in time we, might
find that maybe we are, too!
This man, when he saw that he was cleansed, turned around, ran back, and
fell down on his face, giving Him thanks. Then we read that the Lord had a
question. We want the Lord to answer all our questions, but He had one, too. "And
Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine?" I
have often wondered the same thing when people get helped. I never want to take
the Lord and His goodness for granted. Thanksgiving recognizes that we would not
have our blessings if the Lord didn't give them to us. I am not lacking because
Someone loved me enough to bless me and care for me. For that I am grateful!
When I was a child I thought as a child. I didn't know my parents sacrificed so
much so I could eat and have a roof over my head and water for a bath. I knew
nothing of a light bill or car insurance. I took it all for granted. They gave and gave
and told me every night they loved me. It was all good! But then I became a man
with my own family. It wasn't as easy as they made it seem. Life got difficult
sometimes. I look back and am so very grateful for my parents, my family, and our
God, the Provider of all good things!
Jesus went on to say, "There are not found that returned to give glory to
God, save this stranger. And He said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith
hath made thee whole." Now wait a minute: the Lord equated a thankful heart
with faith? Yes. Being thankful to the Lord for His kindness creates a breeding
ground for faith to grow and flourish. Show me a person who thanks God for their
blessings and I will show you a person who has a living faith. It's when we are not
thankful that faith seeps out of our hearts. We become discouraged and our spirits
droop. The quickest way to turn your attitude and outlook around is to begin to
thank the Lord for all His wonders and blessings. He is good to all. His sun shines
on the evil and the good. His rain falls on the just and the unjust. We thank God
that even if we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, He is with us. His
rod and His staff comforts us. Make it a point to thank the Lord for the people in
your life, the things you have, and the promises that are found in the Bible. Things
will turn around for you and on the other side of your battle you will hear the Lord
say to you: "Arise, go your way: thy faith hath made thee whole."
From everyone at our church we wish you a wonderful Thanksgiving. We
invite you to our church. We meet on Sundays at 10 am and 7 pm, and Wednesday
at 7:30 pm. May God bless you!
Sincerely,

Rev. Daniel Bossidy
