Assignment 1
Chapter 3

1. Express and explain:

a) Bernoulli equation in two different forms (i) as energies per mass (ii) as heads.
b) What is stagnation pressure? Explain how it can be measured.
c) What are the three major assumptions used in the derivation of the Bernoulli equation?

2. The jet of water is initially 12 cm in diameter and when directed vertically upwards reaches
a maximum height of 18 m. Assuming that the jet remains circular determine the rate of
water flowing and the diameter of the jet at a height of 12 m.

3. A pipe AB carries water and tapers uniformly from a diameter of 0.1 m at A to 0.2 m at B
over a length of 4 m. Pressure gauges are installed at A, B and also at C, the midpoint of
AB. If the pipe centerline slopes upwards from A to B at an angle of 30o and the pressures
recorded at A and B are 3.0 and 3.6 bar, respectively. Determine the velocity at point A
and point B and flow through the pipe at B. Then, determine the velocity and pressure
recorded at C by neglecting all losses.

4. A closed tank partially filled with water discharges through an orifice of 15 mm diameter
and has a coefficient of discharge of 0.7. If air is pumped into the upper part of the tank,
determine the pressure required to produce a discharge of 37 dm3/min when the water
surface is 0.8 m above the outlet.

5. A siphon has a uniform circular bore of 75 mm diameter and consist of a bent pipe with its
crest 2 m above water level discharging into the atmosphere at a level 4 m below water
level. If the atmospheric pressure is equivalent of 10 m of water, determine:
a. The outlet velocity below the crest
b. The flow rate out (mass flowrate and volumetric flowrate)
c. The absolute pressure at crest level.
Neglect the losses due to friction.

6. As shown in Figure below, a pipeline system. Water flows through pipe AB and pipe
BC, and branch out into two pipes, pipe CD and pipe CE. Pipe CE carries one-third
of the flow in pipe AB. Some of the flow properties are given in TABLE.
TABLE: Flow properties.

C
A B

Pipe Velocity, ms-1 Diameter, m

AB 4.0 1.2
BC 1.5
CD 0.8
CE 3.5

Determine:

a) The volumetric flow rate of water in pipe AB.

b) The velocity of water in pipe BC.
c) The velocity in pipe CD.
d) The diameter of pipe CE.
