Urban walkability is an urban area of the city which able to give pedestrian
surroundings an easy access and connect people to various destinations (Recliming
the Walkable City, 2005), capable of providing security and safety for pedestrian,
and also to deliver comfort and appeal towards them (The Global Walkability Indeks,
2006). Based on those criteria, Makassar is one of the cities in Indonesia which yet,
its environment isn’t walkable enough for pedestrian, this is by means of Makassar
City had experiencing differentiation on result of uncontrolled vehicle’s accretion
enacting pedestrian surroundings become neither humanist nor walkable. The aim of
this research is to ascertain the walkability index and its development priorities,
which will be used as a reference to implement courses on design concept in order to
increase the quality of walkable pedestrian expanses. This research was executed in
four locations, which are Jalan Penghibur, Ujung Pandang, Riburane, and Ahmad
Yani. Method used to achieve this aim were Walkability Index Analysis to measure
the walkability index and Importance Performance Analysis to measure the variable
quality on perceiving development priorities, so that obtained results on how jalan
Penghibur and Ujung Pandang have walkability index in middle category or in other
words waiting to walk, while on jalan Riburane and Ahmad Yani have walkability
index in lower category or not walkable, and also results of varied development
priorities starting from high to low priority in either of these locations. Reference
used to increase the quality of pedestrian surroundings that are humanist and
walkable is to developing the walkability aspect to reach high and at least, middle
priorities.
