Math 2208 On Campus Minitab Assignment 2 on Chapter 6-8 Fall 2018

Is the salary of a head sports coach related to the total number of students attending a college/university?
Numerous US colleges/universities report information about their institutions to the US department of
education. Some of the information reported is related to sports. A random sample of 46 US Colleges
/Universities was selected from the reporting College/Universities in the database. In this assignment, we will
look at the relationship between the number of students (x) and head coach salary (y) using regression analysis.
If necessary, refer to the Minitab Survival Guide in your lab manual for more help. Please use Minitab
version 18 for your assignment.
The Minitab file COACHSALARY.MTW contains this information and is available on your class Moodle site.

MINITAB 18 INSTRUCTIONS
Open the Minitab data file COACHSALARY.MTW from your class Moodle site. You will see the data file
has two columns: C1 is the head coach salary, (y, the response variable), C2 is the total student enrollment
(x, the explanatory variable).

1. Make a scatterplot of salary vs student enrolment.

To do this, click on Graph > Scatterplot, then choose Simple and click OK.
Salary is the Y variable and students is the X variable. Click OK.
The plot will appear in a separate window.

2. Perform the regression of salary on student enrolment and plot the residuals:
Stat > Regression > Regression > Fit Regression Model…,
Choose Salary as the response, Students as the Continuous Predictor.
Choose Graphs... and select Four in one then hit OK
Choose Results… uncheck Analysis of Variance
Hit Ok and Ok.
The result will appear in the Session window, the plots in a separate window.

3. Find the predicted salary for a head coach from a school with student enrolment of 1590:
Stat > Regression > Regression > Predict …
Leave choice as Enter Individual Values and type 1590 into the first box under Students.
Hit OK. The results will appear in the session window.

4. In the Minitab spreadsheet, go to Column C3 and row 1. Type Math2208 in this spot.
Choose “Data > Recode > To Text”. Then enter C3 in the box ‘Recode values in the following columns’.
Next to Method, choose Recode individual values from the drop-down menu. Under the box “Recoded
value” replace Math2208 with your name and student number. Then hit OK. The output will appear in the
Output window.

It is now time to save and print your work. You will be required to submit your output, so make sure that that
you print all output and graphs so that you can include it with your writeup (including the session window
with your name and ID).
5. Save your Minitab work using File – Save project As (great idea in case you need it later).

To print from Minitab:

Click anywhere on the session window and select File > Print Session Window from the top panel. Click
on the scatterplot and select File > Print Graph from the top panel. Repeat this process to print your four-
in-one plots.

If you are copying your output to a Word document: Open a word document. In Minitab right click on
the section of output that you want to copy. Right click to make a drop down menu appear and select Send
to Word. This will send the selected section from the session window to word. Do this for all sections of
text/data in your session window.

Analysis: Answer the questions in the space provided on the last 2 pages. Remember that all statements
must be worded in the context of the problem. Also, do not perform any calculations - simply highlight or circle
the appropriate parts of the Minitab output as needed.

Submit: In the following order: your answer sheet, Minitab output, and graphs as one document to hand in
during class.
MATH2208 OnCampus Minitab Assignment on Ch 6-8 Name:

1. 3 pts Give a description of the relationship seen on the scatterplot, in context.

2. (a) Highlight/circle the slope on the output (it appears in more than one place, but only identify it once)
(b) 4 pts State and interpret the value of this slope in context.

3. (a) Highlight/circle the regression equation on the output.

(b) 1 pt. State the regression equation highlighted in (a).

4. (a) 2 pts Calculate the predicted head coach salary for a college/university with 1590 students.

Predicted value =

(b) On the output, find the predicted head coach salary for a college/university with 1590 students and
highlight it. Record the value below.

Predicted value =

(c)1 pt How does the value on the output compare with your calculation above?

5. 1 pt About what percentage of variation in the head coach’s salary is accounted for by the number of
students?
6. 2 pts Calculate the correlation, (hint: use Rsq and the slope). Show your work.

7. 5pts Do the linearity assumption AND outlier condition appear to hold? Discuss below, referring to the
appropriate plots.

8. 2 pts Would it be appropriate to use the regression line to predict the head coach salary for a college with
12000 students?
Circle response: YES NO
