Gratitude: More than Just Saying “Thank You”

Of course saying “Thank You“ is important – it reflects good manners and a desire to show
consideration toward others.
To be genuine gratitude must come from our deepest selves. It requires us to be aware and
Nurse’s Notes truly be in touch with our lives and the good things that flow our way. An attitude of
gratitude contributes toward healthier communities by making each of us feel respected and
connected when people show appreciation and kindness – and often we want to give back in
return. This interdependence allows for the individual and society as a whole to survive and
prosper.
In this age of smart phones, texting, and emails, all designed for quick, superficial messaging, we often are too busy
and unaware to actually sit down to think about what we are thankful for and then to communicate that gratefulness to
others – with the sad consequence of loneliness, isolation, depression, all of which can contribute to ill health.
Gratitude serves as a corrective as we stop and deeply consider the good things that flow to us moment by moment,
day by day. So, stop. Consider. Make a gratitude list. Look around. Notice the multitude of blessings: family, friends,
health, shelter, food, the beauty of these crisp Fall days, etc.
Gratitude helps us on many levels:
• We tend to feel happier. In studies subjects wrote down one thing for which they were grateful every day for
a full six months. At the end of the time they reported less depression.
• A boost in energy levels. Subjects in studies reported greater energy with keeping attitude journals. Their
health improved and consequently their energy.
• A gratitude practice has also been associated with improved kidney function, reduced blood pressure and
stress hormones levels and a stronger heart. Slowing down so as to truly be aware, mindful does lead to
better body function.
• When we notice kindness and other gifts our brains become wired to seek out the positive in most
situations; we are better able to adjust and cope with stress in a more effective way.
• Our personal relationships improve if we are more mindful of the good of the other and regularly
acknowledge those good points.
• We become nicer people. When appreciation is expressed, it triggers a biological response in the recipient’s
brain of dopamine, a chemical that gives us a feel good surge. When gratitude is expressed toward another
they feel good in return, which sets up a give and take of appreciation. If we feel good about what we are
doing or saying we will want to continue.
So, for your own good health and well–being stop and count your blessings, count them one at a time, and then
notice how well you feel. Notice how those around you feel as they benefit from your good will and appreciation
of them.
Meditation: With gratitude remember daily the blessings that come our way. With gratitude remember the people,
the creatures, the earth, the sky; in gratitude remember all of God’s blessings. Offer gratitude for safety, for this
earth, for this community, for those who support and love us. Sit in gratitude for the very life you have been
given.
In mindful awareness offer these blessings to others:
“May you be joyful”
“May your happiness increase”.
“May you be well”
“May you live in peace and thanksgiving”
