A Brief History of the FDOT CADD Office
• At the Florida Department of Transportation, Engineering and IT were one office
starting in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s.
• In 1991, the CADD Office became the Engineering CADD Systems Office – a
separate office under the State Highway Engineer.
• Until 2009, ECSO exclusively supported the use of Bentley Microstation/GEOPAK
for plans production.
• In 2009, ECSO began working on the AutoCad Civil 3D State Kit, paving the way
toward CADD platform neutrality for plans production in the State of Florida.
• Today, the FDOT CADD Office is now part of FDOT’s Production Support Office
under the Office of Design, providing support, training, standards and CADD
workspace configurations to state employees and consultants using both Bentley
and AutoDesk software to produce plans for the State of Florida.

How Do The FDOT CADD Workspaces Work?
Once the your CADD application is installed (e.g.,
Bentley Microstation/GEOPAK or AutoCAD Civil 3D),
the corresponding FDOT CADD workspace is installed.

All of FDOT’s CADD workspaces include icons to

launch the CADD application in “FDOT Mode.” These
icons are typically located in a folder on your desktop
bearing the name of the FDOT workspace that you
have installed.
How Do The FDOT CADD Workspaces Work?
There are icons in these desktop FDOT folders that launch your CADD
application in FDOT workspace mode, as well as icons for other useful
tools.
How to Install the FDOT Workspace – FDOTSS4
• There are two configurations for installing the FDOTSS4 Workspace
• Standalone Workstation Installation – All of the
configuration files and resources are installed
locally on the workstation at C:\FDOTSS4\
• Client/Server Installation – User

the client. Site configuration files, apps,
tools and resources are installed to the
server.
How to Install the FDOT Workspace – FDOTSS4
• There are two configurations for installing the FDOTSS4 Workspace
• Standalone Workstation Installation – All of the configuration files and resources are
installed locally on the workstation, typically in the C:\FDOTSS4\ location.
• Client/Server Installation – The majority of the configuration files and resources are
installed to a folder on a server, and the files required to launch the FDOTSS4
workspace are installed locally on the client machine.
• Which configuration is right for me?
• Standalone workstations are recommended either for small sites or for laptops that
may need to be used when disconnected from your site’s network. All necessary files
live locally and the workstation need not connect to a server to run the FDOTSS4
workspace.
• Client/Server configurations are recommended for large sites to allow for easier
updating of the FDOTSS4 software when maintenance releases are deployed.

FDOTSS4 FAQ – I get a “Can’t Open Macro File…”
• Issue: After installation, I get an error “Can't Open Macro File
C:\workspace/users/sitefdot.txt,
c:\FDOTSS4\workspace\users\FDOTSS4.UCF, line 27”
• Resolution: Restart your Workstation or Client machine
• Explanation: The FDOTSS4 installation creates three System
Environment Variables that point to the local, server and project
folders for FDOTSS4. These variables do not become active until the
machine is restarted. Launching the FDOTSS4 workspace immediately
after installation without restarting will result in this error.
FDOTSS4 FAQ – I get a “Can’t Open Macro File…”
• Issue: After installation, I get an error “Can't Open Macro File
\\[SERVER]\FDOTSS4\workspace/users/sitefdot.txt,
c:\FDOTSS4\workspace\users\FDOTSS4.UCF, line 27” and restarting my
machine does not fix it.
• Resolution: Check your System Environment Variables, or re-run the
FDOTSS4 client installation, or log an issue with the FDOT CADD Office for
assistance.
• Explanation: It may be that the location for your FDOTSS4 server
installation has changed after the update or your server name may have
changed. Updating the environment variables by re-running the Client
installation will direct your client machine to the correct FDOTSS4 server
location.
FDOTSS4 FAQ – Unable to Start CADPilot UI
• Issue: After a recent update, on startup of FDOTSS4, I get an error message:
“Unable to Start CADPilotUI. Application path C:\Users\...\Cadpilot.UI.EXE”
Check File/Folder Permissions.
• Resolution: Run Workspace Doctor with the default settings. Locate
CADPilot.UI.EXE on the server, right click for properties and select
“UNBLOCK.”
• Explanation: Sometimes, after an update, an older version of
CADPilot.UI.EXE will be leftover in the user temp folders, because the new
server update version of CADPilot.UI.EXE has been blocked by Windows.
Unblocking the new .EXE will allow it to overwrite the older version
resident in the Windows user temp folder.
FDOTSS4 FAQ – .NET Framework Unhandled
Exceptions
• Issue: On startup of FDOTSS4, I get 3 Unhandled Exception Errors for
Microsoft.NET Framework. FDOTSS4 loads normally, but a number of
tools continue to give .NET errors.
• Resolution: Launch the CMD.EXE prompt to run cmdlets to set
Microsoft.NET Framework LocalIntranet_Zone security to “Full Trust.”
• Note: These cmdlets are available in a white paper from the CADD
Office. This white paper also explains additional steps to take if the
issue is not resolved.
• Explanation: Certain FDOTSS4 tools use Microsoft.NET. If the Local
Intranet security is not set to Full Trust, these tools will fail when run
in a client/server configuration.
FDOT2018.C3D FAQ – Civil 3D Compatibility
• Question: Does the 2018 State Kit work with Civil 3D 2017 or 2016?
• Answer: No, the installations are version specific and numbered
accordingly. FDOT2018.C3D is certified for use with AutoCad Civil 3D
2018. Older versions of the FDOT State Kit, such as FDOT2017.C3D
and FDOT2016.C3D are also specific to those versions of AutoCad Civil
3D and will not install with other versions.
FDOT2018.C3D FAQ – AutoCad Compatibility
• Question: What if I don’t have Civil 3D and only have AutoCad 2018?
• Answer: FDOT provides an “AutoCad Only” version of the FDOT2018
State Kit for use with AutoCad 2018. This State Kit is only compatible
with AutoCad 2018, and will not install with Civil 3D or with older
versions of AutoCad.
FDOT2018.C3D FAQ – FDOT Ribbon Issues
• Question: Why does the FDOT ribbon not load, and the environment
looks like it is missing information?
• Answer: Run the profile scrubber whenever this issue or any other
unexpected issue arises. The instructions can be found in the
installation guide.
FDOT2018.C3D FAQ – DLL Issues
• Question: The CADD office just sent me a new DLL file for an
application and it gives an error message when I click on it, what’s
wrong?
• Answer: When we send a new DLL file, sometimes your computer will
block it. Right-click the DLL and select properties, then select
“Unblock,” click “Apply” and then “OK.”
