Durante os quatro anos em que servi como representante permanente do Brasil junto às
Nações Unidas, em Nova Iorque, minha rotina diária implicava quase sempre deslocamentos
à sede da Organização. Normalmente, [...] tomava a escada rolante que conduzia ao segundo
andar, onde ficam as mais importantes salas de reuniões.
Na subida, ia contemplando o mural “Guerra” do nosso grande artista Candido Portinari, que
ali fora colocado na década de cinquenta. Ao final da sessão, fazia o percurso inverso: ao
descer pela escada rolante, gêmea da anterior, tinha à minha frente o outro componente do
par pintado por Portinari: o mural “Paz”.
Somente anos mais tarde, vim a me dar conta plenamente da simbologia contida na maneira
como ambas as pinturas haviam sido dispostas. Nosso artista significava a “todos que ali
entravam” – para parafrasear Dante – que eles traziam consigo conflitos e, potencialmente, os
“horrores da guerra”. Mas à saída, após discussões, que poderiam parecer infindáveis ou
frustrantes, esses homens e mulheres deveriam levar consigo a paz ou a esperança dela.
