No ordinary teen
Spending most of your free time caring for the
elderly is not something most teenage girls would
enjoy doing, but sixteen-year-old Ashleigh Keen-
Burrow is not like most teenage girls. Since she
won the Young Star Supreme Award for
outstanding community service last year, Ashleigh
has continued her efforts to help others.
She had been volunteering at Marne Street
Hospital for two years before winning the award,
and after she won it she was offered a position as
a caregiver. Ashleigh said she had been caring
for the elderly residents as a job for nearly 12
months and absolutely loved it. She also volunteers at the children’s ward at Dunedin Hospital every
Saturday and attends for longer periods during the school holidays.
She has just completed year 11 at Otago Girls’ High School, and received a cultural blue for her
contribution to community service. She has also achieved her bronze and silver Duke of Edinburgh’s
 Awards and wants to complete her gold next year.
 Ashleigh added she knew m ost girls her age did not have the same passion for volunteering, but she
had never been particularly interested in the things many other girls liked, such as shopping. “I just felt I
wasn’t really doing anything with my Saturdays,” she answered. All her work and volunteering could get
in the way of spending time with friends, but they understood and supported her, Ashleigh explained.
She had had a bit of bad luck over the p ast year. She was invited to attend two events because of her
award, but they were cancelled. Both the Chinese New Year, where she was to light fireworks, and the
Dunedin Trolley Derby, where she was to fire the starting gun, were rained off.
 Ashleigh wants to continue helping others by training as a nurse when she leaves school. Her mother,
 Amanda Burrow, said Ashleigh had always wanted to help others. “She is an old head on young shoulders.
She has always been as solid as a rock. I’m incredibly proud of her,” she said.

PART 2 Read the text.

Being British
What do British teenagers really think about their country? Do they love the UK or hate it? In a
recent survey, teenagers answered the question, “What do you love about Britain?” 
Music
 A third of the teenagers in the survey (33%) love British
music, but they all like different types of music and music
stars from The Beatles and Coldplay to Adele, Sam Smith and
Ed Sheeran.

Pastimes
 A lot of British teenagers (21%) also love football and which
team was the most popular? Chelsea, of course. 20% of
young people think that British comedy is the best and their
favourite series is Doctor Who, a British science-fiction
television programme produced and broadcast by the BBC
from 1963 to the present day.

Countryside
 A similar proportion of young people (21%) also love
exploring the British countryside and coast. The most
popular places for young people are Cornwall where they
love going surfing or Wiltshire with its strange stone circles
like Stonehenge.

Freedom
14% of young people love Britain because they think that British parents give their children a lot
of respect and freedom and they are happy to live in a democracy where they can express their
opinions. Also, many teenagers like living in a country with so many different cultures and
styles.
Food
Many foreigners don’t like British food, but British teenagers are very fond of it. 10% of teenagers
in the survey thought that British food was the best thing about the country and they enjoy eating
bacon, sandwiches and baked beans. Also, many British teenagers like drinking a nice cup of tea
in the morning.
And…
Some other things that British teenagers love most about Britain: Tower Bridge, their kind attitude
to animals and the BBC. But some teenagers said they didn’t love anything at all.

Student A: That’s a good idea. We’ve got beautiful monuments and places in the neighbourhood.

Student A
This photograph shows two people. They might be a vet and a nurse because they are treating a dog that
must be ill.
The dog is on a table and the vet is trying to apply some medicine. Both the nurse and the vet are in blue
overalls to protect their clothes while they are working. The vet has got a stethoscope. The nurse is younger
than the vet. She has got long straight dark hair; the doctor is young and has a beard.
Student B
This photograph shows a young woman cleaning up a river. She and the other girls are wearing yellow and
red helmets and wetsuits to protect their bodies. The river is a dark colour, so it is polluted. It looks as if it is
full of rubbish. Unfortunately, some people are careless and throw everything into the water. As a result, they
pollute the water and fish die.
Besides people, some factories also contribute to water pollution by discharging toxic products into rivers
and seas.

PART 4
Student A: To help the others, we can do various jobs, either occasionally or on a regular basis. For
example, we can just help an old person cross the street.
Student B: I agree with you. Helping older people do small jobs, like carrying their shopping bags, is another
good example.
Student A: We can also volunteer at a food bank centre, soup kitchen, hospital and other places that need
the help of volunteers.
Student B: I’d like to give a helping hand at a food bank centre because they depend on the volunteers’ help
to collect and give out food.
Student A: That’s a good idea. Nowadays / these days there are many people who don’t have enough food
to eat, which is very sad.
