Intro (10 minutes)
1. We have learned a lot about different types of poems already. Can you name all
the different types of poems we have learned about so far?
2. Last time you wrote haiku poems. Does anyone want to share their poem? Have 3
or 4 students share their poem. (those who are not finished the haiku poems will
have some time during the work period to complete it).
3. Today we are going to be learning about a new type of poem called a cinquain
poem.

Body (45 minutes)

4. Pull up a cinquain poem on the whiteboard
5. Have students look at the structure.
6. Their job is to determine the rhyme scheme, theme, the rule for for each line. For
example, the second line can only have two words.
7. Students discuss with their elbow partners.
8. Students inform the class what they think the rules are for writing this type of
poem.
9. Record the predictions for the rules
10. Put up another cinquain poem and have students see if the rules they made for the
first poem is correct for the second poems as well.
11. Inform students of the rules, that there are five line, 11 words, the first line only
had one word which is the theme or the title of the poem, second line two words.
Ask students what type of words are they and what their relationship is regarding
the first word or is there any relationship at all?
12. Now show students a cinquain poem that has the lines mixed up. Again with their
elbow partner determine the correct order of the poem.
13. Students share what the correct order of the poem is.
14. Now let’s write one together using the list of adjectives and verbs.
15. After writing one together. Inform students that they will be writing their own
cinquain poem. I want them to write it about their favorite food.
16. Review expectations for poem writing. Write a rough draft, self-edit, peer edit and
retrieve a good copy paper and write.
Closure (5 minutes)
