MUSI 3334: Musicianship II

Spring 2017

MWF – 12:00-12:50, OCH 113

Instructor: Eli Stine – ems5te@virginia.edu

Office Hours – Wednesdays, 1:00PM, OCH 212

Overview:
These lab courses give practical experience with many aspects of musical perception,
performance, and creation. These will include sight-reading and sight-singing; dictation of
melody, rhythm, and harmony; aural identification of intervals, chords, and rhythmic patterns;
and exercises in musical memory and improvisation. Students entering the sequence take a test to
determine the appropriate level of their first course. At the end of each course, students take a
placement test to determine whether they may enter a higher level course. Courses may be
repeated for credit, but each course may be counted toward the major only once.

Objectives:
In pursuit of enhanced musical perception, performance, and creation, students are expected to
be able to do the following skills by the end of the semester:
• Identify all intervals through the double-octave.
• Identify all triads in inversion, and all 7th chords in root position.
• Take down tonal and modal melodies of advanced difficulty from dictation, including
skips of all diatonic triads and 7th chords.
• Take down brief chorale-style progressions from dictation, involving all diatonic chords.
• Take down brief 2-part counterpoint exercises.
• Take down rhythmic exercises of advanced difficulty from dictation, including
syncopation, triplets, and less common meters.
• Sing at sight rhythmic exercises of advanced difficulty, including triplets, syncopation
and less common meters.
• Sing at sight tonal melodies of advanced difficulty, including intervals from all diatonic
chords.
• Accompany oneself on the piano with simple melodic lines.
• Use cumulative skills to analyze parts of real pieces by ear.

Attendance:
Regular attendance is essential for successfully advancing through the skills of Musicianship.
Absences due to illness require documentation from University Health Services or a health
professional, or they will be considered unexcused. Three unexcused absences will result in a
lowering of the final grade. A pattern of tardiness will also result in a lowering of the final
grade. Students with no unexcused absences and who are punctual will have their lowest
quiz grade and their lowest homework grade dropped. Students receiving an unexcused
absence will also receive a 0 on any assignments due that day.

Policies:
The use of laptops and recording devices is not permitted during Musicianship classes without
special permission from the instructor.
Students will receive communications from the instructors in their virginia.edu email boxes, and
are expected to check this account daily for such communications.
There are no make-up quizzes or homework assignments in this class, if a student is absent for an
excused reason they will not receive a grade for that assignment.
