Simulation and Cont rol of Solar Wind Hybrid Renewable Power

System

Abstract:

This paper presents a standalone hybrid power generation system consissting of solar and
permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) wind power sources an d a AC load. A
supervisory control unit, designed to execute maximum power point trac king (MPPT), is
introduced to maximize the simu ltaneous energy harvesting from overall power generation
under different climatic conditions. Tw o contingencies are considered and categorized according
to the power generation from each ene rgy source, and the load requirement. In PV s ystem
Perturb & Observe (P&O) algorithm is used as control logic for the Maximum Powe r Point
Tracking (MPPT) controller and Hill Clim b Search (HCS) algorithm is used as MPPT co ntrol
logic for the Wind power system in order to maximizing the power generated. The Fuz zy logic
control scheme of the inverter is intended to keep the load voltage and frequency of t he AC
supply at constant level regardless of progress in natural conditions and burden.
Existing method:

The existing method de scribes the variable speed wind energy conversion systems,
Permanent Magnet Synchronous generator (PMSG) is gaining popularity. PMS G have a loss
free rotor, and the power losses are confined to the stator winding and stator core. A multi-pole
PMSG connected to power convverter can be used as direct driven PMSG in lo cations with low
wind speed there by eliminating the gearbox which adds weight, losses, cost an d maintenance. A
gearless construction of wind conversion system represents an efficient and reli able wind power
conversion system.
Proposed method:

The proposed method proposes the simulation and control of (PV/wind ) hybrid systems
including energy storage battery connected to the AC load. Study of modeling and simulation on
the entire PV/wind/battery hybri d system is carried out under Matlab/Simulink e nvironment.

Drawbacks of existing met hod:

1. The solar and wind power gen eration cannot operate at Maximum power poin t (MPP)
without proper control logic in the MPPT boost converter.
Advantages of proposed m ethod:

1. The control logic of the MPP T controlled boost converter for the Wind power generation
and PV based generation are selected on the basis of ease of implementation.
Applications:

Renewable energy source applic ations.
