Introduction

1.1 Introduction to Industrial Training

Industrial Training program is a main component in the Bachelor of civil engineering

course at University Malaysia Pahang (UMP). During the Industrial training, the students shall
be placed at selected company for a certain period, in which they shall be exposed to the reality
responsibilities. A successful Industrial training is important for the students to be qualified for
the degree. This shall also allow the students to prepare themselves for future career work. An

1
Industrial Training should be related to a student’s personal career interests and academic
courses of study, serving as a connection between university and the field of work. This
Industrial training program is also a shared social obligation for both University Malaysia
Pahang and the practical company involved. In order to achieve the requirement of the university
and complete my course structure of Bachelor in Civil Engineering, I had undergone my 10
weeks of Industrial Training in a company Perunding RJA. I have completed 10 weeks of my
industrial from 27th June 2016 until 2nd September 2016.

1.2 The goals of Industrial Training

Industrial training aims to develop the student’s knowledge and skills in a specific career
of their respective fields and at the same time produce graduates who are sincere, creative and
talented. It is a good experience for the students to face before entering the working life after
graduating which is the outside experience is different with the formal education environment.

1.3 The Objective of Industrial Training

Industrial Training provides specialized work experience with specific projects and tasks.
Also to encourage a personal career interests, serving as a bridge between university and the
world of work. Moreover, to help students make informed decisions and improve their leadership
and marketability after graduation. In addition to encourage students to apply the skills and
knowledge gained at the university to benefit the organizations. Lastly to train and prepare
students with knowledge and skills requirements of current and future engineering environments.

2
1.4 Program learned outcome

From industrial training program we can come out with this advantages like Ability to
demonstrate the use, interpretation and application of an appropriate international engineering
standard in a specific situation. Student will able to analyze a given engineering problem,
identify an appropriate problem solving methodology, implement the methodology and propose a
meaningful solution to apply prior acquired knowledge in problem solving. Also to identify
sources of hazards, and identify appropriate health & safety measures. Applying the theory and
knowledge and experience during the period of Industrial Training will give better understanding
for the student which helps them to grab a clear idea of what they have learned in University
with the working environment. In fact, team work and effectively communication for problem
solution either in oral, visual and written in addition trainee are able to manage a project within a
given time frame and lastly to facilitate the trainee to take engineering decision.

ACTIVITES DURING INDUSTRIAL TRAINING

3.1 Study the material use

3.1.2 Formwork

I learned and got some information about the material that used in the construction and building
and the advantage and disadvantage of everything such as the difference between the steel
formwork and timber formwork. The steel one is used for slander columns because it can endure
the pressure of concrete during casting and the timber formwork is better for rectangular
columns and slabs.

3.1.3 Scaffolding

Moreover, a knowledge was gained about scaffolding and what it uses for :

 Provide a platform to stand safely and carry on the construction

 Provide a platform to keep necessary materials of construction
 Scaffolding is also needed for the repairs or demolition of a building

3.2.1 Slab construction

I started working as a resident site engineer assistant. The work began in zone 3:2. We
started working in slab and I learned about all steps of slab constriction. As a trainee I
got an experience about working in the site as a site engineer and learnt about slab
construction.

7
3.2.2 Slab formwork

The first step in slab is the form work. It should be timber formwork and it bears on
steel scaffolding .

Figure 3.2.2.(slab formwork)

3.2.3 Taking alignment

Taking alignment by using living equipment is importing to ensure that the slab is in same level
with taking care of the drop panel and beam

8
Figure 3.2.3.1( Taking alignment)

3.2.4 Slab reinforcement

As it can be seen in the drawing, the number and diameter of top and bottom bars are giving.
So, as a site engineer, we should make sure that the distance between the bars is the same as in
drawing . Also the bras should be by lap together

9
Figure 3.2.4.1(slab reinforcement) Figure
3.2.4.2(slab reinforcement)

3.2.5 Slab casting concrete

10
Casting is the final step before casting we do concrete cube test. During the casting,
the workers should distribute the concrete and shake the concrete to avoid collapse .

Figure 3.2.5.1(casting)
figure2.3.5.2(shake concrete)

Figure3.2.5.3(distribution concrete)

3.3.1 Columns
construction

11
The second activity I started working in columns construction as supervisor assistant in zone
4:2. A column or pillar in architecture and structural engineering is a structural element that
transmits through compression, the weight of the structure above to other structural elements
below. So as a trainee I got a lot of experience from this activity I learnt how to read the drawing .
Also, how to deal with the workers and delver to consultant .

3.3.2 Columns reinforcement

The first step in column construction is the reinforcement at zone 4:2 the columns is
rectangular the number of bars and the space between it is given in the drawing. The number of
stirrup in the top and bottom of the columns must be more than the medial it should be one stirrup
every 10 cm at first 1m in top and last 1m bottom. The cover concrete and Styrofoam are
supposed to be added to the formwork.

Figure3.3.2.1(reinforcement bars) Figure3..3.2.1(adding cover concrete and Styrofoam)

3.3.3 Columns formwork

12
Formwork is the second step in columns construction, the formwork must be well-closed from all
directions to avoid concrete leaking during casting. The next step is taking alignment form all
directions to ensure that the column is not sloping by linking the thread from the top of the
column and place the weight in the bottom and measure the distance from the top and bottom .

Figure3.33.1(column formwork)
Figure3.3.3.2(column alignment)

3.3.4 Columns casting

13
Casting concrete is the final step in column contraction in zone 4;2 we used portal mobile pump
concrete so to make casting easier. During the casting the worker must shake the concrete by
using shaker to avoid spaces inside the concrete.

Figure3.3.4.1(column casting)

3.4.1 Post-tension slab

Post-tension slab is a form of prestressing, has several advantages over standard reinforcing
steel): It reduces or eliminates shrinkage cracking-therefore no joints, or fewer joints, are needed.
Cracks that do form are held tightly together. It allows slabs and other structural members to be
thinner. After finishing the columns in zone 4:2 I started to work in post-tension slab in zone
4:1.As a trainee I learnt a lot about post-tension slab and got a good experience like working
under pressure because it took two weeks of daily working and the casting took 24 hours .

14
3.4.2 Formwork and shear concrete

Like any slab the first step is to construct the formwork and put the shear concrete as in the
drawing because in post-tension slab there is no bottom reinforcement so after finishing the
formwork directly we go to put the shear concrete .

Figure3.34.1(spurring workers during working )

Figure3.3.4.2(post-tension formwork)

3.4.3 Adding the cabals

15
Next step in post-tension is adding the cabals in the slab according to the drawing of post-
tension on the shear concrete and install the ends of the wire. So after the workers finish, we
review the work and take the distance between the cabals .

Figure3.3.4.1
(post-tension cables ) Figure3.3.4.2 (post-tension cables end)

Figure3.3.4.3 (review the

work and taking the distant)

3.4.4 Post-tension slab reinforcement

16
Adding the top bars and stirrups as in the drawing. So I check that the distance between the
bars is the same as in drawing and so are the stirrups .

Figure3.4.4.1 (post-tension reinforcement )

3.4.5 Adding the Styrofoam

17
Adding the Styrofoam in the post-tension slab is required and it should be covered with a
layer of concrete 10 cm thick.

Figure 3.4.5.1 ( Adding the Styrofoam to post-tension slab)

3.4.6 Casting the post-tension slab

18
Casting the post-tension slab took 24 hours, because we wear casting using fixed molding
pump due to the difficulty to reach the slab using portal mobile pump concrete.

3.5.1 Drilling in zone 4:3

In the last week of industrial training, I worked in drilling foundation for a new zone in the
mall . I got many information and experiences like supervising the workers and team work skills.

19
Also, I learnt how to take alignment by using living equipment. the drilling was by heavy
machineries and the first step is cleaning the area by using excavator machine after that we start
using Jackhammer to cracking rock and solid soil. The last step is taking alignment by using
living to make sure that the excavator got the same level as in drawing.

CHAPTER 4

CONCLUSION

4.1 CONCLUSION

Industrial training to the students is very importanct for exposing students to the working
environment and to acquire experience before stepping into the real world. It will also help students
use what they learned in university to apply and compare in real life or at actual construction
project. Industrial Training also motivates students to be more serious in study to get the best
results for a better future.

I am glad that I was given an opportunity to be part of Perunding RJA trainee for 10 weeks.
During this industrial training, it is a big step forward in my engineering life since Perunding RJA
has involved for several fields of works such as environmental, structural, pavements, earthwork,
foundations, water supply, sewerage and others. So that, as a practical student, I will get many
experiences and knowledge about the construction work.

I had the opportunity to learn and use the theory with practice while completing the tasks,
assignments given by Ir. Ahmad Kamal and my supervisor. Then, I could also develop various

22
skills in work ethics, communication between the Perunding RJA staff. From this training, there
are many things I have learned and gained. Additionally, this company also was used to hold the
gathering lunch every Friday for their staff and class to read Al-Quran. So that, not only the
construction work I can learn, but also I can learn the most beneficial knowledge to be an educated
engineer with a strong faith.

I was planning to do my practical training in my country or another Arabic country. However,

it was a great chance to do it here in Malaysia to improve my communication with different
cultures and people. Honestly, I did not feel like a stranger during my industrial training yet we
were working as one family. At here, I also have learnt how to be a good employee that is
disciplined, time management, communication skills are very important to be a good and obedient
employee.
