Introduction
Hello students of Year 4 Blue,

Thankfully we here at the APA (Animal Protection Agency) have just rescued heaps of endangered
animals! Your teacher told us that you have all been learning about animal habitats and
sustainability, that’s why we are asking you all to design and build enclosures for these precious
animals.

Design Brief
We will need you to choose one endangered animal to build an enclosure for. Most of the animals
that we have rescued are mammals but there are a few birds and reptiles that we have, your teacher
will be able to confirm the animals that we have. Because these animals have been rescued from the
wild, your enclosures will need to have an environment that replicates the natural environment of
your chosen animal. The more natural features in your enclosure the better! As the APA is proudly a
sustainable organisation we expect that your enclosures will be as sustainable as possible, some
things that we recommend is using recycled materials where possible and having sustainable
features such water tanks and clean energy. Because we have so many enclosures being designed
we want you to make it easy for us to evaluate and include labels highlighting the natural and
sustainable features of your enclosure.

Project Specifications
When building your models, we’d like you to use recycled materials from your home and school,
things like cardboard boxes, scrap paper, empty soft drink bottles etc. we have provided your
teacher some materials for you to use as well, these include things like pop sticks, sticky tape and
coloured clay, all of which are made from recycled materials. Ideally, we want you to build an
enclosure for an endangered mammal, but you’ll need to adjust the scale of your enclosure to suit
the size of your animal. We’d like you to make your enclosure look realistic too, so we are asking you
to paint your enclosures to show the natural features that you’re including.

Evaluation
We have asked your teacher to represent our organisation and to evaluate your designs. We have
sent a check list which looks at how sustainable your enclosure is and how well you incorporate
natural features specific to an endangered animal’s environment.

Presentation
To showcase your designs, we organised a display day where all new enclosures will be put on
display and everyone will be able to view the animal enclosures. This is why it’s essential that you
include labels.

Time
We have organised a schedule to help you complete this project:

1. Introduction – 1 period
2. Research – 1 period
3. Design – 1 period
4. Preparation – 1 period
5. Building – 2 periods
6. Presentation – 1 period
