Introduction
BEES NEED OUR HELP YEAR 5!
The mystery of the honeybee decline is a world-
wide problem that is also in our backyards and
school yard. Scientists have been able to link the
decline to parasites, pesticides and habitat loss.
But the facts aren’t clear.
LET’S DO SOME DETECTIVE WORK!
Some scientists are wanting to create an artificially species
genetically superior in labs so that it would be immune to
parasites and viruses. However, others are worried this will
disrupt our fragile ecosystem balance. There have also
been trials involving mixing the genes of New Zealand’s
honey bee with our Australian honey bee which resulted in
the genetically modified bee having deformed wings!

Design Brief
‘POWER OF THE FLOWER’
OBJECTIVE:
To plant a variation of flowers from those already flowering on the
school ground that attract our bees and provide them with a
variation of pollen in hope to help the health of the Australian
honey bee colonies. An important friend that balances our precious
ecosystem and that provides us with a delicious topping for our
WeetBix!

purchase them over that weekend.
A HIVE FIVE!
 Gloves are to be worn AT ALL TIMES in lesson four or at Presentation
any time when planting, handling or digging in soil.
PORTFOLIO
 If rostered for watering at recess you are to first report Completed by Friday Week 8
to Mrs Allen or myself in the classroom. To show off our hard work we will be compile a portfolio
piece in class individually. The portfolio must;
 Flowers are only to be watered by rostered volunteers,  Be presented on an A4 card
not before or after school or during recess breaks  Include (at least) 3 images
 Planning and evaluation booklet; filled in, chopped and
pasted
 50-100 words reasoning why we did this project

*This may need to be taken home to be worked on if class

time is not use effectively.
