Gerunds and infinitives

Use gerund (verb+ing):


- after prepositions and phrasal verbs (I gave up smoking.),
- as a subject of a sentence (Eating sweets is bad for you.),
- after some verbs like: hate, spend, enjoy, don’t mind, finish, like, love,
practise, stop, suggest etc.

Use long infinitive (to+verb):


- after adjectives (It’s interesting to see the pigeons.),
- to express a reason or purpose (I save money to buy a car.),
- after some verbs such as: afford, agree, decide, expect, forget, help, hope,
offer, plan, pretend, promise, refuse, remember, see, try, want, would like etc.

Use short infinitive (without to) :


-after modals and auxiliary verbs (You must hurry.),
- after make and let (Let me go out. She makes me laugh.)

After begin, start, prefer, continue you can use gerund or infinitive without a
difference in meaning.

Some verbs can be followed by gerund or infinitive, but the meaning is different.
I remembered buying bread.= I bought the bread.
Remember to call your friend!= Don’t forget to do it!

I stopped to buy bread.= in order to buy bread.


I stopped eating.= I was eating and I interrupted the action.

Try to come early!= make an effort to do this.
