Introduction to Portfolios
3

Every student must complete portfolio requirements each year in order to conduct their own student-led
conference with their parents/guardian during the Creativity Expo. Detailed portfolio requirements are listed on
pages 2-8 in this handbook.

At Highland Community High School, students will be using the online Weebly program to create their portfolio.
This program provides the students with a safe online environment to develop their portfolios.
Students will be required to have entries in their portfolio for a minimum of five academic courses per quarter,
for a minimum total of 20 entries at the end of each school year.

***Student portfolios will be graded at the end of each semester.

Rubrics and guides for portfolio contents are included in this handbook and should be used to ensure a high
quality portfolio.

The student portfolio and portfolio presentation will be evaluated using the scoring guides and rubrics
contained in this handbook. The portfolio will be considered as part of each student’s annual performance in
their block course.

o Completed entries should be added to the student portfolio during pre-designated resource work days.

o The Student Portfolio Checklist should be maintained in this handbook.

Artifact Requirements
o Artifacts MUST be uploaded to the portfolio and not just described.
o Chosen artifacts display your goals, growth, effort, and achievements from throughout the school year.
● These may include, but are not limited to: assignments, projects, notes, slideshows, movies, videos of
presentations, photographs, pieces of writing, etc.
● Grade snippets are not an appropriate demonstration of student growth over time.
o Artifacts MUST include a Title, Academic Quarter in which it was completed, and Reflection (see below).

Reflection Entries
o All entries MUST include a well written reflection using at least one of the Reflective Prompts provided in this
handbook.
o The first paragraph of each reflection must contain detailed and specific information about the
assignment or project.
o Paragraph two of each reflection must address at least one of the reflective prompts provided in this
handbook.
o Grammar and spelling will be assessed for each reflection.
o The reflective entry has a rubric which is in this handbook.

Academic and Career Planning Requirements

4

This new requirement to your portfolio will be a tab created to house artifacts from a variety of academic and
career planning activities you will complete throughout the year. You will be required to add one artifact to the
ACP tab each semester.

Book Talk Requirements

This new requirement to your portfolio will be an artifact and presentation (at the Creativity Expo) of a book that
you choose to read on your own time. This cannot be a book that was assigned in any of your classes. This is
an opportunity for you to choose a book that you enjoy and in the genre of your preference.
o Create a tab in your portfolio for your “Book Talk”
o Include: Title, brief summary of the book, and why you chose that book to share with your peers
o Grammar and spelling will be assessed for each reflection.

**Book Talk presentation guidelines and rubric will be provided in the spring so you can prepare to present
your book at the Creativity Expo Commented [1]: We need to get this into the rubric for
next year

General Portfolio Reminders

Resource Advisors will be checking the quality of students’ reflective entries and artifacts periodically
throughout the school year.

It is the student’s responsibility to complete their portfolio requirements as described in this handbook.

Pre-designated Portfolio Work Days

The purpose of the pre-designated work days is to provide an opportunity for students and staff to be mindful
of portfolio requirements and/or work on Portfolios. However, you may need to use time outside of resource to
finalize your portfolio before presentation day.

Mondays during Resource hour will be designated as Portfolio work time.

Commented [2]: Is this a separate grade or part of the

Portfolio total grade?

Portfolio Presentation Rubric Commented [3]: I think it was a separate grade last
year???? I can't remember.
The portfolio conference will take place during the Creativity Expo. The idea of the conference is that you showcase your
accomplishments from the year to your parents, grandparents, or other members of the community. To give Formatted: Highlight
comprehensive coverage of your accomplishments, pick one artifact to highlight for each class per semester. Your
portfolio conference is scheduled for 20 minutes. Aim to fill 15 minutes with your highlights, leaving time for questions and

general reflections on the year. Make sure to address the goals you established at the beginning of the year and reflect
on how well you did at meeting the goals you set for yourself.

Portfolio Front Page

The front page of your portfolio is just like the cover of a book. Certain, yet simple, information is needed in
order for the reader to better identify with you and the contents within. Like a book’s cover, the front page to
your portfolio should also be designed to attract the attention of the reader. You want to do your best to make it
interesting.
6

Your Front/Home Page required elements shall include the following:

● Your name and a photograph of you or a photograph that represents who you are
○ You MUST respect copyright laws by citing the image if using an image that’s not your own.
● Academic and 21st Century Goals you established for this school year and steps you selected to
achieve these goals
● Upload a digital copy of the current Student Portfolio Handbook
● Table of Contents (Navigation Tabs)...Previous years work MUST be present

Warning: DO NOT change your theme once you have inserted artifacts. You will lose all of your work.
Feel free to design your front page in a way that best represents you; however, it is important to keep in mind
that your portfolio is a professional document that represents your abilities.

Reflective Prompts for Portfolio Artifacts

· Why is this my best work?

· What makes this my most effective piece?

· What did I do well that I want people to notice?

· What do I want my advisor to look for as he/she evaluates this piece?

· What critical thinking strategies did I use to complete this task?

· How did I go about accomplishing this task?

9

· What skills did I improve while completing this task?

· What other skills do I need to improve that I noticed as a result of this work?

· What did I find most difficult about completing this task?

· What problems did I have and how did I solve them?

· What would I do differently if I had a task like this again?

· Where do I go from here?

· How could I improve this work?

· What does this work show about me?

· How does this relate to what I learned before?

· What did I learn about myself when doing this work? How can I apply this to the real world?

EXAMPLES:
An example of a poor reflection:

● This is an algebra quiz. I got 8/10 on it.

● This is a paper I wrote. It was hard. I would do it again if I had to because it was awesome.

● I liked this project. It was fun. I would recommend it to other students.

An example of a reflection that needs improvement:

Quarter 1 - Latin America Project

I really liked this ILT project. We worked in groups to present information on a Latin American country.

My group did a Google slideshow on Brazil. I learned a lot.

An example of a good reflection:

Quarter 1 - Persuasive Essay

I was a little nervous when we were first assigned the task of writing a 600 to 800 word persuasive essay,
and I was really nervous about having to include facts to back up my argument. As usual, my biggest
struggle was just getting started, but once I found a good issue to research I found it easy to begin the
process of writing. The most rewarding part of this project was presenting my argument to my peers and
getting their reaction.
