OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standard 1. Relative and Absolute Dating
2. The Major Subdivisions of Geologic time
(including index fossils)
3. How the lanet Earth eveolved in the last
4.6B years
B. Performance Standard Describe the possible geologic events that
occurred in a certain area based on the rock layers
found therein.
C. Learning Competencies/Objectives At the end of the session, students are expected
to:
1. Describe the different methods (relative
and absolute dating) of determining the
age of stratified rocks. S11ES-IIh-i-39

II. CONTENT Natural Hazards, Mitigation, and Adaptation:

Hydrometeorological Phenomena and Hazards
III. LEARNING RESOURCES
A. References
1. Teacher’s Guide Pages
2. Learner’s Manual pages
3. Textbook pages Earth and life Science, pp. 26-34 Phoenix
Publishing
4. Additional Materials from Learning PowerPoint presentation, video clip, marker,
resource (LR) Manila paper
B. Other Learning Resources
IV. PROCEDURES
A. Reviewing previous lesson or presenting Review:
new lesson (REVIEW) How are rock layers formed?

B. Establishing a purpose of the lesson Clothes bin analogy

(MOTIVATION)
C. Presenting examples/instances of the Introduce the following terms:
lesson (PRE-ACTIVITY) - Relative dating
- Absolute dating
D. Discussing new concepts and practicing Activity: Relative Dating
new skills (ACTIVITY PROPER) 1. Present three or more people of
widely varying ages and include a
sample description about “clues”
to their age like favorite songs, TV
shows, etc.
2. Ask the learners to justify their
answers by enumerating the
criteria. List the criteria on the
board.
3. Ask the learners to guess the
respective ages of the persons on
the list.
Learners will now come-up with an “idea” about
relative dating based on this activity and the
clothes bin analogy.

E. Discussing new concepts and practicing Activity 2: Absolute Dating

new skills (DEEPENING) Monggo in a Box
F. Developing mastery (POST ACTIVITY) Students will come-up with the comparisonof
relative and absolute dating based on the two
activities.
G. Finding Practical applications of concepts, Students will relate relative and absolute dating on
skills in daily living (APPLICATION) the discoveries that were made from fossils, age of
the Earth, etc.
H. Making generalizations and abstractions Roll the Die
about the lesson (GENERALIZATION) Put a die on the teacher’s table. At the end of the
class, student volunteers roll and briefly answers
aloud a question based on the number rolled:

1. I want to remember…
2. Something I learned today…
3. One word to sum-up what I
learned…
4. Something I already know…
5. I am still confused about…
6. An “Aha” moment that I had
today…
I. Evaluating Learning Assessment - 10 item quiz
J. Additional activities for application or Interview a resource speaker to give insights about
remediation (REMEDIAL) relative and carbon dating.
