Question 1 (20 marks)

An element is shown in Figure 1. A state of plane stress consists of a tensile stress x = 90 MPa acting
on its vertical surfaces, of a tensile stress y = 60 MPa acting on its horizontal surfaces, and of unknown
shearing stresses. This stress combination results into a minimum principal stress (min) of 40 MPa.
Evaluate:
- average normal stress (avg)
- maximum in-plane shear stress (max)
- maximum principal stress (max)
- orientation of principal planes

Question 2 (20 Marks)

The composite beam is made of steel (A) bonded to brass (B) and has the cross section shown in Figure
2. If the allowable bending stress for the steel is 180 MPa, and for the brass is 60 MPa, determine the
maximum moment M that can be applied to the beam. Ebrass = 100 GPa, Esteel = 200 GPa.

Question 3 (30 marks)

A simply supported beam AB is shown in Figure 3. Consider modulus of elasticity E = 210 GPa and
moment of inertia I = 24.2 × 106 mm4. Calculate vertical deflection at the centre of the beam AB.

Question 4 (30 marks)

A beam is supported at both ends as shown in Figure 4a. The cross sectional area is shown in
Figure 4b. It is fabricated using a mild-strength steel which is assumed to be elastic-perfectly
plastic. The stress-strain diagram is shown in Figure 4c. (Note the drawings may not be to scale).
(a) Determine the bending moment:
-when yield first occurs
-when top and bottom flanges just become fully plastic
(b) Determine the intensity of the distributed load that is applied to the beam when the section at the
location of largest bending moment becomes fully plastic.
