48331 Mechanics of Solids – Main Exam
An element is shown in Figure 1. A state of plane stress consists of a tensile stress x = 90 MPa acting
on its vertical surfaces, of a tensile stress y = 60 MPa acting on its horizontal surfaces, and of unknown
shearing stresses. This stress combination results into a minimum principal stress (min) of 40 MPa.
Evaluate:
- average normal stress (avg)
- maximum in-plane shear stress (max)
- maximum principal stress (max)
- orientation of principal planes

Question 2 (20 Marks)
The composite beam is made of steel (A) bonded to brass (B) and has the cross section shown in Figure
2. If the allowable bending stress for the steel is 180 MPa, and for the brass is 60 MPa, determine the
maximum moment M that can be applied to the beam. Ebrass = 100 GPa, Esteel = 200 GPa.
