A. System 1 (20 points total)

1. Short description of the environment you visited to use System 1 (above ground, below
ground, low-lit, etc.). Use about a paragraph and be sure to include information about
what the system is, what exactly it does, and where it is. (5 pts)

a. The system used was an Apple iPhone SE. The user has never used an iPhone or any
Apple product before; she has always used Android products. The user interacted
with her new iPhone SE in a pizzeria because she wanted to capture the memory of
her first deep dish pizza. The user was in the pizzeria in the afternoon, meaning it
was a well-lit environment. The iPhone SE has many capabilities. There are the
basic qualities, such as making the general phone call, sending emails, and sending
text messages, and there are the more extravagant qualities, such as posting pictures
and statuses via social media platforms, playing games, listening to music, etc.

2. Short description of the task that User 1 intended to accomplish. Use about one to two
sentences. (5 pts)

a. The task the user intended to accomplish was taking a picture, and then attaching
said picture in an email. Then, the user would write a message and send the email to
her friend.

3. A description of the documentation you collected, with at least two examples of each
type you collected for User 1 (e.g., some observation notes, a pair of photos, two sample
think-aloud quotes, etc.) (5 pts)

a. I took a few photos showing how the user found out how to attach a picture to an
email and the final image of the email showing the attached image.

i. This is a picture of the pizza that the user took a photo of.
Tanya Churaman Homework 2 CS 3750-A

ii. This is a picture displaying how the user is attaching the photo of the pizza in an
email.

iii. This is a picture displaying how the user successfully attached the photo of the
pizza to an email. The user has also put in the email address of her friend. (The
email addresses have been blocked out for privacy).

b. As the user tried to perform the task, I took a few observation notes of the
experience and the user’s opinions.
i. The user displayed a little bit of confusion (verbally and facially) on what
certain symbols stood for on the interface.

-
o This specific symbol troubled the user because she did not
understand what it meant.
ii. The user verbally expressed her satisfaction about how simple it was to
complete the task in such a small number of steps.

4. Description of when, during the task, User 1 showed frustration, confusion, satisfaction
or another notable experience, along with what those experiences were and how the user
conveyed them (e.g., looking frustrated or confused, words they said, etc). Use about one
to two paragraphs to discuss the experience you observed. (5 pts)

a. At the beginning of the task, the user showed some anxiety about using her new
phone because she is a bit older and not used to “this new technology” (that’s what
she called her new phone). The user verbally mentioned to me that she was nervous
switching over to a different model phone, considering she barely knew how to use
her Android phone. The user seemed at ease to take the photo of the pizza because
she was smiling as she took the photo. She mentioned that the “Camera” app was
self-explanatory – “You click the Camera app and then click the big white circle
button.” She then said, “Also, the fact that the picture taken is shown in the bottom
left-hand corner confirms I have taken the photo.” She then clicked on that area to
access her photo. The user then displayed confusion on how to attach the photo
because she didn’t see a symbol that necessarily screamed “this attaches photos!”.
She had a puzzled look on her face, and she kept commenting on how the symbols
were not obvious of their function. After guessing a symbol, she was easily able to
attach the photo by clicking the Gmail icon. She showed immense happiness when
she successful attached the photo. She said, “That was much easier than my Android
phone!” She smiled very brightly and looked excited as she began to compose the
message for her email.

B. System 2 (20 points total)

1. Short description of the environment you visited to use System 2 (above ground, below
ground, low-lit, etc.). Use about a paragraph and be sure to include information about
what the system is, what exactly it does, and where it is. (5 pts)

a. The system used was the kiosk ordering system at Panera Bread on West Campus,
Georgia Tech. The kiosk is located inside West Village on a dark wooden table,
thus it is above the ground at a height that is easy for users to touch easily without
having to bend. The environment in West Village is very lighted. This kiosk system

is used for anyone who wants to order food from Panera. Users use the system to
quickly order food instead of standing in line and waiting to order. The kiosk saves
time by allowing the user to pick what items he/she wants to eat with the option to
customize certain food products. The user can also pay for their food at the system
when ordering as well. Thus, when the user has finished ordering food, all he/she
has to do is wait for his/her name to be called, meaning the food is ready

2. Short description of the task that User 2 intended to accomplish. Use about one to two
sentences. (5 pts)

a. The task the user intended to accomplish was to order a half order of a “Roasted
Turkey & Avocado BLT” sandwich (the user randomly picked that) and pay for it
using her credit card.

3. A description of the documentation you collected, with at least two examples of each
type you collected for User 2 (e.g., some observation notes, a pair of photos, two sample
think-aloud quotes, etc.) (5 pts)

a. I took a few photos showing how the user ordered her “Roasted Turkey & Avocado
BLT” sandwich.

i. This is a picture displaying the different kinds of menu category options the user
had to choose from.
Tanya Churaman Homework 2 CS 3750-A

ii. This is a picture showing that after the user touched the “Sandwiches” option
from the photo above, the screen now presents an array of the all the different
choices for a sandwich. For each choice, there is a choice to customize the
sandwich and/or order a full sandwich or a half sandwich.

iii. This is a picture showing the user reviewing her order after selecting her half
order of a “Roasted Turkey & Avocado BLT” sandwich.

b. As the user tried to perform the task, I took a few observation notes of the
experience and the user’s opinions.
i. The user seemed to user the kiosk intuitively, clicking through the options
rapidly as she ordered even though she had never been to Panera before.
ii. The user commented, “This is extremely easy and very colorful. I love how I
can see what each option looks like!”
iii. The user easily paid for her meal by just swiping her credit card when the
kiosk asked her to.

(5 pts)
a. The user really enjoyed using the kiosk system. When she initially began using the
system, she seemed to immediately know what to do. She clicked on the button “Tap
to order”, which made it evident to her of how to begin ordering. She said, “The
background is so aesthetic! I love the button that allows me to get started right away.
The user was then pleased by the beautifully colored categories, telling the different
types of food the user could order. She commented, “The categories are useful so I
don’t have to scroll through every single product.” She was beaming as she ordered
through the kiosk. As she looked through the sandwiches, she commented, “This is
extremely easy and very colorful. I love how I can see what each option looks like!”
This option allowed her to be sure of what sandwich she really wanted. As it was
time to pay for her order, the user quickly swiped her credit card to pay for her meal.
Once she was done, she said, “Wow! That was quite easy! Better than waiting in that
long line. That’s for sure.”
