Experiment No 04:

Problem statement:
A shaft is made of three parts, as shown in figure. Parts AB and CD are made of same material with a
modulus of rigidity of G= 9.8e6si and each has a diameter of 1.5in. Segment BC is made of material with
modulus of rigidity G= 11.2e6si and has a diameter of 1in. The shaft is at fixed at both ends. A torque of
2400lb.in is applied at C. using three elements determine the angle of twist at B and torsional reactions
at boundaries.

Procedure:
Discretization:
Divided the shaft into three elements because we have to calculate the polar moment of inertia for each
element.

Working in ANSYS Mechanical APDL:

ANSY Main Menue- Preferences- structural Ok.

Materials Models- Structural- Elastic- orthogonal then created materials models for 3 elements
separately.

3) Sections- beams- common sections- selected sub type and added radii for sections
Section 1 solid shaft with radius .75in

Section 2 solid shaft with radius .5in


4) Modelling
Modelling- create- nodes- In active CS then located all the 4 nodes.

5.0) Modelling- create- elements- elements attributes-material no. 1-section no. 1- ok.
5.1) Modelling –create –elements-auto numbered-thru nodes-pick nodes 1 and 2-ok

Element 1 is created.

5.2) Modelling - create –elements-auto numbered-thru nodes-pick nodes 3 and 4-ok

5.3) Modelling- create- elements- elements attributes-material no. 2-section no. 2- ok.

Element 3 is created.

5.4) Modelling-create –elements-auto numbered-thru nodes-pick nodes 2 and 3-ok

Element 2 is created.

6) Loads- Define loads- apply- structure- displacement- on nodes- pick node 1- ok DOF to be
constrained-ok. Again loads- Define loads- apply- structure- displacement- on nodes- pick node 4- ok
DOF to be constrained-ok. And torque of 2400ln.in is applied at node 3.
7) Solution- solved current LS

Comments:
This lab session is helpful to determine bending moment and torsional effect into mechanical components
especially for shafts, nuts, bolts, also we can determine deflection into different type of beams. So keeping
in mind the torsional effects into components we can design the objects which can serve well and chances
of failure decreases through the proper analysis of components.
