Tragedy in South Korea after the sinking of a ferry

At least six people were killed and 290 missing after the sinking of the ferry( ship that combines the
features of a cruise )Seoul off the southern coast of South Korea with 476 people aboard , mostly high
school students went on vacation . The ferry , a vessel of 6,325 tons , sailed from Inchon on Tuesday
night , suffered an apparent collision about 20 kilometers southwest of the island of Byungpoong two
hours after which it sank .

At least 180 people were rescued , leaving the number of missing at 290 . The number of people on
board was also increased to 476 .

Six people were confirmed dead , including a woman and a student crew , but with fears that the deadly
end balance is much higher.

"I fear there is little chance of finding alive those who are still trapped inside ," said Cho Yang -Bok , head
of the rescue .

By nightfall , divers , including a team of South Korean special forces, were inspecting the boat several
decks with the help of large pockets to find survivors.

Authorities fear that hundreds of people are trapped in the ferry , which capsized and sank near the
island of Byungpoong in just two hours after the mailing of the first distress signal at 09:00 . Television
showed passengers in life jackets inflatable boats escaping the shuttle. Some sliding down the inclined
hull while others were rescued by small boats fishing boat.

Loud Noise

The ferry was heading to Jeju Island , a popular tourist resort in the country. Among the passengers
there were more than 300 students and 14 teachers from a secondary school in Ansan, a city in
southern Seoul , which went on vacation .

Although still unknown what caused the accident , some survivors explained that the ferry stopped
suddenly , as if aground , despite the weather conditions were favorable.

"The crew asked us not to move , but then the ship tilted suddenly and was very hard to leave ," said a
witness. "There was a very loud noise and then the ship began to lean to one side ," said another
survivor .
"People were trying to climb to the upper decks , but it was very difficult with the boat tilted ," he told
YTN .

"I feel a deep pain to see how some students who were traveling to face this tragic accident," said
President Park Geun- Hye .

Parents of students gathered at the high school Ansan awaiting news, and trying to communicate with
their children.

Many people were rescued by fishing boats and merchant vessels were in the area before the arrival of
the Guard
