AUDITIONS AT THE SA COLLEGE OF MUSIC

INFORMATION for 2019 APPLICANTS:


OPERA, CLASSICAL VOICE & CLASSICAL INSTRUMENTS

Auditions are BY APPOINTMENT ONLY; as soon as you have applied to UCT


and have a student number, contact music@uct.ac.za with details of your
instrument and the course for which you are applying (e.g. BMus opera, Diploma
in Music Performance).

Auditions for all applicants are scheduled for the following days:
Saturday 29th September; theory test at 09h00, practical audition from 10h00
Saturday 1st December; theory test at 09h00, practical audition from 10h00

You are strongly advised to audition as early as possible, particularly if you are
applying for university accommodation and/or financial aid.

INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS must audition by the end of October at the very


latest in order to obtain Visas etc that you will need.

The minimum standard for entry is Grade VII (UNISA, Royal Schools, or Trinity).
Please be advised that this minimum standard also applies to students admitted to
the Foundation programme.

Auditions by recording will be permitted in special circumstances and must be


presented Please record in a video format compatible with quicktime software e.g.
avi, mov, dv stream, mpeg2, mpeg4, quicktime movie.
Please note that applicants who audition by recording:
a) may be required to audition in person before a final decision can be made.
b) will be required to write the theory test at the start of the academic year if
he/she is accepted for music. Should the theory not meet a suitable standard for
first-year theory, the applicant will be required to register for the extended
programme before progressing to either the degree or the diploma.

Please note that when you email your audition recording (Sheila.taylor@uct.ac.za)
you may have to break it into 2 files for the individual pieces, and a 3rd file for the
scales -- most email servers will not handle the size of files that occur when all 3
components are in one file. Alternatively, download to google drive and give
access to Sheila Taylor.
SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
Prospective students should arrive at their audition with instrument and
music in order, prepared to efficiently run through their works.

No applicant will be auditioned without a completed and signed


“MOU-Audition rules” form, available from music@uct.ac.za.

CLASSICAL VOICE/OPERA
Prepare two classical songs/opera arias in contrasting styles; these should be
performed from memory. Remember to bring music for the accompanist in the
key you are singing it in.
Recordings should consist of three classical songs/opera arias in different styles.

CLASSICAL INSTRUMENTS
For both live and recorded auditions, the following must be played:
1. You will be required to play 2 contrasting pieces from different style periods.
Movements of works are acceptable. You may play pieces from any recent
examination.
2. The panel will also expect you to play scales and arpeggios (minimum of Grade
VII level). For recorded auditions, please play 9 scales and arpeggios, in the
following mixture: 2 Major scales, 1 harmonic minor scale, 1 melodic minor scale, 1
chromatic scale, 1 Major arpeggio, 1 minor arpeggio, 1 dominant arpeggio, 1
diminished arpeggio
3. Please bring for the panel a copy of the scales-syllabus you have prepared
(UNISA, Royal Schools, or Trinity). For recorded auditions, please state, before you
start playing the scales, which syllabus you have chosen your scales from.
4. For live auditions, you will be asked to play a short piece of sight-reading.

In the case of Classical Guitar auditions, Rock school Grade VII does not apply.
Candidates must have Classical Guitar Grade VII (or play at equivalent level) and
perform on a nylon-string classical guitar.

In the case of Classical Piano auditions, all applicants will be required to prepare a
Quick Study, which will be emailed to applicants one week prior to the audition date.
IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to request this quick study from music@uct.ac.za .

POSTGRADUATE APPLICATIONS
A 30-minute audition consisting of works from three contrasting style periods. You
will be required to submit a comprehensive CV of your relevant previous studies and
repertoire you have covered. You are also required to submit the programme you will
be presenting for approval before an audition can be confirmed.
