Note 1: The use of Trunk OVC End Points and Trunk Identifiers at ENNI A allows the Operator MEN to determine the type of
ingress UNI and thus properly forward each ENNI Frame using Root and Leaf S-VLAN ID values
Note 2: OVC End Point 3 at ENNI B is a Leaf OVC End Point because any ingress ENNI Frame mapped to this OVC End
Point is the result of an ingress Service Frame at a Leaf UNI
Note 3: OVC End Point 7 at ENNI B is a Root OVC End Point because any ingress ENNI Frame mapped to this OVC End
Point is the result of an ingress Service Frame at a Root UNI

Hairpin Switching
q  Hairpin switching occurs:
q  Where ENNI Frames associated with an EVC are sent back across
the same ENNI from which they were received by the Operator
q  When an ingress S-Tagged ENNI Frame at a given ENNI results in
an egress S-Tagged ENNI Frame with a different S-VLAN ID value
at the given ENNI

q  When an OVC associates two or more OVC End Points at a given
ENNI

q  Note: Improper use of Hairpin Switching can result in a data

loop between two Operator MENs at a single ENNI

OVC End Point in the End Point Map

q  Reducing the number of OVCs required to cross a transit

network

Operator Virtual Connections
q  An OVC is an association of OVC EP
q  An EVC segment within one operators network

q  The OVC constrains the exchange of frames between the

External Interfaces in an Operator MEN
q  At the ENNI each S-Tagged ENNI frame maps to a single OVC
EP and therefore to a single OVC
q  At the UNI each Service Frame maps to a single OVC EP and
therefore to a single OVC
